Proper nouns come into play in Scrabble rule change
Mattel said there would be no hard and fast rule over whether a proper noun was correct or not.
A spokeswoman for the company said the use of proper nouns would "add a new dimension" to Scrabble and "introduce an element of popular culture into the game".

That's just wrong. :smokin:

ugh. yeah, that could be next, if they're looking to include 'popular culture'

I was thinking with all the bizarro new first names people are giving their kids these day, you could almost put down any sequence of letters and say, "Oh yeah, I meant somebody with that name (or spelling) the other day." And you might be telling the truth.

And brand names!?

It's the continuing dumbing down of things.

I don't like Scrabble. I want a dictionary that uses place names, foreign words, Latin and the like. I still can't get over not being allowed to use the name "Dixie".

I mean, it's supposed to be like a crossword puzzle, right? Don't they use proper nouns?

You should see how my daughter likes to play - she goes off the board if need be and correct spelling is sometimes...um...optional.

+1

It is about money.

More people today CARE about popular culture, American Idol, movie stars, blah blah blah. :puke:

The new Scrabble rule will cause friction between two groups of players.

Newcomers to the game will want to use the new rule concerning the acceptance of proper nouns.

The regulars will want to abide by the old rule disallowing proper nouns. The regulars also fear a slippery slope in which further changes concerning rules could be made such as allowing internet slang (LOL), foreign words, etc. Maybe they think the game will also become less intellectual by being able to use proper nouns. The "dumbing down" as Mikhailoh mentioned.

Worrying about spelling is so yesterday. :rolleyes2:

Hey, they should have a set of rules targeted to appeal to liberals, another set for conservatives.

Exploit and enlarge the divisions in society for profit. :thumb:

In another sense, what would you expect of a generation that was told that everything they did or wanted to do was just hunky dory, and they should feel GREAT about themselves even if they accomplished nothing?

Anything goes at the altar of Narcissism Self-Esteem.

Not sure how the generation argument comes into play here. Do we know the age of the decision makers who made this happen?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

In one sense this is just fine.
Mattel just a business looking for ways to sell more product by appealing to today's potential customers.

People change and we are more stoopid and shallow now.
A game that appears to appeal to intellectuals is doomed in a country where GWB actually got reelected, and Sarah Palin is embraced by zillions.

Stupid is the new black.

The Washington-based nonprofit organization found that young adults and their elders agree: Baby boomers and Generation X-ers have better work ethic and moral values than those in their 20s.

I'm entirely comfortable with that. For a lot of companies they've brought this on themselves.

I didn't have all that great a work ethic at that age and I doubt the X'ers did either. They'll develop one as it becomes clear that it is advantageous to do so.

I'm pretty sure my understanding of a good work ethic was established around the age of 10. It depends on the person. Fine with me if others have no work ethic - they'll get fired so I have a better chance of finding a job!

As for the Scrabble issue - WTF? So much for it being an educational game. Next thing you know, kids won't know how to read the hour hands on a clock!
And how are you today?
