I just applied for a job as a part-time Associate helping to plan and conduct pet funerals.

Even more depressing is that I probably won't even be considered for it.

Man, Dewey, it sounds like the job market there is horrendous.

Have you considered broadening your search area? Not that anyone likes a big commute, but it might help.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Dewey, I thought you were an architect? I know times are lean as I have a friend who works for Swanke and he's concerned. Sorry if things are difficult, we reckon it could be a year before any upturn begins. Where employment is concerned you just got to keep plugging away till you find the place where your face fits. You never know what God has for you round the corner.

I think it's great that you are willing to do whatever it takes. I know unskilled work isn't as meaningful as your chosen profession, however work itself is honorable.

?? pet funerals.

I have to be honest:
For the 7 years I've read your posts Dewey, I always thought you'd make a most excellent addictions counsellor, someone to help the depressed, suicidal, those experiencing extreme burdens in their lives. Like outside a church setting. I've never met you of course, but to me, I sense a man who could talk to anyone, anytime, in any situation [IOW not an office-couch based therapist]. By "talking", I mean listening. You & I both know those who are most effective listen way more than they talk. I believe you've these unique traits and special talents Dewey. Something to think of.

I could be wrong of course, but these are my thoughts.

Dewey, you might try the local hospitals. Your education and people skills could make you very valuable in a number of areas such as patient advocate, etc.

Even if you started out with a little volunteer work it might well work into more, and it is more along the lines of what I perceive you might find rewarding.

But I know just what you mean. I applied for a lot of weird jobs last year just to find something to do and to bring in a few bucks.

Yeah, I've had jobs kind of like that. They can be wholly awful at the time but hilarious a few years down the road; you can get your best stories from experiences like that.

Was thinking along the lines of Aqua. Think of the sermons you could write a few years down the path. : 0

Andy: I am an architect. Unfortunately, the current unemployment rate for architects in this area is currently hovering somewhere right around 30%. To try for something using my architectural background, I have applied to a local community college for Adjunct Faculty positions in their 2-year Architectural Associates' program.

blondie: I agree with your thoughts. I've actually applied for lots of jobs that fit into that general area - in fact, I'd prefer to find something like that, even over the architectural angle at this point (the vocational transition has reached the point where I see myself much more as a pastor than as an architect). Problem is, those types of positions generally require educational backgrounds that I don't have. I would probably be able to qualify for some of them with my M.Div, but that's only about half complete now. Also, there are chaplaincy jobs here and there, but while I could likely qualify for them as a CLP, and even though I've got a good amount of volunteer chaplain's time in at a local hospital, I don't yet have my actual Clinical Pastoral Education unit (virtually always a requirement of paid chaplain's gigs) complete. That will run all through the next academic year.

And yeah, I've thought about the possible sermon fodder from being a pet funeral director. ^_^

If you're just looking for a temporary paying gig, have you given any thoughts to working sales for a building materials supplier? I recently saw an attractive opening for Owen's Corning. With your backround, you should have some pretty good connections with some contractors and subcontractors.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Ya just gotta post the pet sermons Dewey. Create a sock, delete names of departed poodles, whatever, but ya just gotta post them! We need this here, ya know ... ;) :D

Seriously, good luck! :) You're on a ragged road now, with bumps and potholes; it's tough going but, you'll tread on new asphalt if you just keep walking.

I see that as a problem in other areas, including teaching.

My piano teacher went to Julliard and then Indiana University for piano performance. He has taught piano for decades. Yet he is not qualified to teach music in our local public schools b/c he didn't major in teaching music. So we have (often) lesser teachers in those jobs. I know not all performers are qualified to teach, but they deserve at least an interview and a critical look.

I see you in the same boat. I am sure your skills are superior to many licensed therapists out there.

Well, if you have been a volunteer in the hospitals, why not speak with their HR department regarding some sort of position? There are ALWAYS openings of one sort or another.

Dewey, my heart goes out to you.
I know what it is like to be in your 50s and redefining yourself, career-wise, in this economy.
It takes some balls.

I wish you all the best and I would not look down on conducting pet funerals.
Animals are very very important to people.
You could even see this as an opportunity to expose people to religion in some way, which I assume is meaningful and valuable to you.

Look on the bright side; there ain't nothing like death to get people to start thinking about God.

Heck, he'd do really well in any job that required human interaction. He could use his powers for good, as you describe, or go towards the Dark Side of sales, it doesn't matter. ( ) He'd obviously be great at both.

Best of luck on the job hunt, Dewey. It's rough out there for everybody.
