Anyone watch this program on the History Channel yesterday? They had computer graphics specialists reconstruct a CG model of Jesus' face based on the image/data on the Shroud of Turin. It was very cool. Especially since much of it was in my realm of expertise, like when they used a Fast Fourier Transform to remove the artifacts at the frequency of the cloth weave, leaving just the impression. Woot! Anyway, lots of interesting stuff, technologically. And the image they produced was actually quite different from the reconstruction image posted in the 'how did Jesus look like' thread. Then they used a prototyper to create a physical model of the cg head. And then used the model to recreate a 2d image to check if it matched the shroud. (and it did). Much of the program dealt with all the issues of the shroud authenticity, and testing and such. I've always found that a fascinating subject. And heard some new stuff this time around. Then I started watching some of the Franco Zefferelli film "Jesus of Nazareth", but turned it off. I thought the characterization of Jesus was abysmal. Just not someone you wanted to get to know at all. Too bad, cuz the all star cast made me want to see their work, but just got bored. |

So what's the latest? Have they determined with certainty that it is the shroud Jesus was in? Have they proven it is not? Is the jury still out, with experts disagreeing? |

I missed it, but I guess it's going to be on again on April 10th - I'll have to record it. |

No proof either way. And the word is that it CANT be proven either way. (I was elsewise distracted thru much of the program. I have it recorded to watch again more closely). They did however show evidence for it being older than what carbon dating previously indicated (and why the carbon dating test may have been invalid). Also, they spoke of pollen spores found in the cloth that are from a specific thorning plant very localized to Israel and that time period. I really liked that. Also, in discussion of its mysteries, I was delighted to hear the mention of 'other dimensions' as a possible explanation for some missing data. Other dimensions are supported by string theory, I'm a fan of string theory. Not that I'm buying into anything here, just love to see the solution space fully explored. |

They did that on this program and they matched up pretty well. It was used to show that the shroud had to date from before the 13th century where carbon dating placed it. |

They also showed several engravings contemporaneous with the carbon date where people were handling the shroud by the corner where the sample was taken. They said you could not possibly find a worse place on the shroud to take a sample. |

I was intrigued by that as well. It was clear from their analysis that the image could not be explained as a point source (laser e.g.) or radiant light phenomenon but had to be as though Jesus was placed under a scanner (hence their reverse reproduction experiment). Clearly, there was something at work here that transcends our conceptualization of reality which projects 3 dimensions onto 2 dimensional sensory inputs. |

I'd like to see it too, but I have to say, after a brief experience with the History Channel while visiting my Dad last week, I'm wondering about the quality of their "history." We don't have cable at home, so it's a whole new world surfing channels when I'm traveling. One evening while at my Dad's, he wasn't too interested in the TV or much else, so I started surfing and hit upon a show on - you got it - the History Channel called Apocalypse Island. It was a "documentary about a "scientist" on a quest to penetrate the meaning of ancient Mayan texts (yep, you got it again - 2012 ). There was supposedly reference to an island in the middle of the Pacific where the Mayans had erected statues to witness the end of time. This guy set out to find it and them. Oh, my, the drama! I have to admit, I was a little taken in by it, and its very "scientific" nature, until I read these comments on a blog about it:
So, I'm wondering if the History Channel might be better titled Histrionics Channel. |

I agree. Seems they're always showing documentaries on ufos, alien abduction, Bigfoot, Nostradamus. But the discerning viewer should always keep a critical skeptical eye, regardless if the source is history channel, discovery channel, or science journals. Bull**** can hide anywhere. |

There is a lot of crap on History Channel. Monster Quest, Nostradamus this and that, Apocalypse this and that, UFOs, etc., etc. but there are some very good things like The Universe, How the Earth Was Made, Modern Marvels, Gangland and even Pawn Stars and Pickers. I could go on. I wouldn't write something off just because it appears on the History Channel just like I would not believe something just because it was on the History Channel. One must separate the wheat from the chaff. |
