Maybe both? I'm going with ignorance though. I don't think that's far enough in the past for a whole generation to forget it. Having said that, although I do know the photo, I guessed D-Day as well. Whoops...and I like history!

The question struck me as being particularly interesting in light of a discussion I had this afternoon during a gallbladder. I mentioned to the surgeon (who is a flight enthusiast and building a He said that the generation of people who are interested in those old airplanes is dying off. The WWII vets are in their 80's, and the generation following them (me) is getting smaller as well. The third generation doesn't have the intimate "feel" of WWII that the other two do. It's something in history books, and not something real. I don't know if he's right, but it does sort of explain this story. |

I've heard the same thing about old cars. Model T Fords are depreciating because no one old enough to be nostalgic about driving them is around anymore. Big Al |

I'm sure the parts for those old warbirds and classic cars are getter more scarce and expensive as well. At one point, Kara, her dad and I were planning on purchasing a gorgeous 1935 Rolls cabriolet and restoring it, until we realized that the cost of doing so would have been more than the price of a new Rolls Phantom. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

George, while I hope most people could identify where and when that photo was taken, I'm not surprised. It's nothing personal against those who lived and/or fought during that generation....but it's just the natural course of history for details and connections to be lost about a certain even as the years go by. Just as I'm sure many during the WWII generation didn't know some of the main facts about the Civil War. And some 50 years from now will probably not even know how many planes went down on 9/11. |

Well, you're right, but I also think that our memories have been serious compromised since the invention of the interwebs. We don't have to know anything anymore, we can look things up online. We don't need to know our times tables, how to spell, or historic events. We have an app for that. I think as a whole our knowledge base is going to keep circling the drain, the more we rely on technology to do our remembering for us. |

A little photoshopping there to be sure, but the famous Iwo Jima photo was staged. That actual flag-raising was far less dramatic in appearance, and I believe the first flag raised was smaller.
