$70,000! Why, one could do almost as much good with 70k as they could with 100k!

HOLY CARP!!!
Nice catch.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

While it can be easily argued that there are more efficient ways to lose $30,000, it may be slightly harder to argue whether there are more efficient ways to learn whatever life lessons she extracted out of the process while essentially having others foot her $30,000 tuition bill; though probably not as hard as quantifying the residual value of the fame and resumé building that result from what she has done there.

Putting aside the clever use of data, there's another way to look at it.

She raised $170K that wouldn't have been raised otherwise, and contributed $70K of that.

That's a fairly high administrative cost percentage, but I've seen charities with worse.

The question is could hs have raised the $100K for charity without the rowing. If not, comparing the two is a moot point.

Whenever I see one of these "exploits" I always wonder, when it goes amiss, and she overturns, falls overboard, gets lost, runs aground, bumps into a ship or a whale, or generally f***'s up. Why do we the taxpayers have to pay, usually a few $ hundred thousand bucks $ , for our Coast Guard to make it right.

The Coast Guard only has authority within our coastal waters.

For most of the journey, you might be thinking of the Navy. Of course, if someone else's naval vessel is closer (or even if a civilian vessel is closer), they'd answer the distress signal first.

100k was poured into motivating one body from point A to point B in the least time-and-energy-efficient way possible. You'd have to do some pretty squishy social sciences to consider that a good "investment", since that investment is entirely emotional and entirely subjective. You'd have to at least figure out the likely destination of that other 70k, had she not done what she did. But it's hard to overcome the pure objective waste of spending 100k on nothing tangible.
