HOLY CARP!!!

I hate TV, but my partner loves it so sometimes I'm exposed to it. I notice a common format for commercials is they present some problem and the solution is their product. More often than not the man can't figure something out and the woman has the solution. It will end with the woman in focus up front looking heroic, with the man in the background, out of focus, playing with the children. I'm sure if the genders were reversed, and women were consistently made to look stupid, helpless and domestic, there would be hell to pay. |

Hey kenny, mark this on your calendar, something we agree on entirely! I've noticed this trend also, and a roommate and I just recently commented on it. They've got to be targeting other women with these kinds of ads though, no way would a guy identify with that kind of crap. I chalk it up to women empowerment as a marketing tool. |

I've been noticing that for some time. If I'm their target audience, they're failing big time. I find those ads really insulting and stupid. Not that I seriously expect much more from tv ads , but it's a trend that really turns me off.

This all changed somewhere back there after My 3 Sons, Father Knows Best, Leave it To Beaver and Bonanza. Since then men have been, for the most part, stupid beer pounding thugs. Maybe Archie Bunker kicked it off, or was it Gilligan? |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Women are often the leading buyers of consumer products, so these ads are targeting them. It's the same reason why men are "so manly" when the commercial is selling a truck. It's all about target audiences. |

Those truck commercials are ****ing goofy, too. Very often, when I watch T.V. I think to myself that I'd really like to meet the person (or team of people) responsible for whatever commercial I'm watching, to figure out just what the hell is wrong with them that made them think the commercial was a good idea. The vast majority of them are all so stupid. |

But marketing is big science and highly researched. May seem stupid to us, but the techniques apparently work. True, dumb ineffective stuff slips thru too (mediocrity occurs in every field). But I cant blame the advertisers for using techniques that effectively sell products, just because it strikes us as 'stupid'. |

I don't care if it works or what they use to sell their products, the commercials are retarded and sometimes enough for me to go out of my way not to buy their products. Of course whatever they do is backed by research and they'll keep making money, I'm just saying most commercials piss me off. |

Because if these commercials really do appeal to the masses it means we all are really that stupid. |

Well, I wouldnt equate it to lack of intelligence as much as an observation of how we are subconsciously swayed. (Often the big stupid thing in your face is just misdirection from the real technique thats making the sale). One of the biggest and most basic marketing techniques is name recognition. Just get the brand name out there in the public eye, regardless of any knowledge about the product or its quality. When facing a shelf with a half a dozen brands to choose from, most people will pick one they've heard of over one they havent, even if it costs 10 cents more. That doesnt equate to the consumer being stupid, its just how the human brain works. Nothing to get upset about. We are what we are. |
