If I didn't like my car, I'd have exercised my right to cancel the sale after 21 days. It's been 7 weeks now and i have not gotten anything in the mail to allow me to register it. They just keep giving me new 30-day paper plates, which is probably illegal on their part. Initially they told me there was another name on the title. I asked what the name was and they told me. I googled it and found her name and number and called her. She was the previous owner of the car but said she and her husband signed the title. The BMV says I need to contact the dealer. The dealer says they applied and the BMV hasn't responded. I believe the BMV because they told me the car had a clean carfax and they sold it to me as a GM-certified car -- only to find out it had been involved in a frontal collision. Luckily, since they blew away the prior owner's privacy, I was able to ask her about this and she said a tire hit the bumper and hood in 2/2008 (date matched carfax) and they replaced the hood and front bumper and there was no mechanical damage. I believe her. She and I know some of the same people and she was aware of this. I DO sincerely hope that the title is not a salvage title. My friend at the credit union said that they would never finance a car with a rebuilt or salvaged title so I have a little peace of mind there. I guess I have no choice but to sit and wait. I am guessing that there is a lien on the car they don't want to pay off and they are playing with the cash flow. |

HOLY CARP!!!

They got the money but can't deliver the title? This doesn't sound right. What if you wanted to sell it right now? You couldn't. They shouldn't be selling cars they don't have the title for. ![]() Isn't there anyone you could call who could light a fire under them? |

That's an old car dealer trick. They hold onto your DMV fees as long as they can get away with(the BMW dealer I used to work at did that from time to time). They'll wait until the last minute before they incur a penalty and turn the paperwork in. If it's like California, there is a 90-day limit. You could sell it if you wanted to while you're waiting. You just have to fill out the paperwork required for a missing title. |

I've bought 7 new cars in my life, all in California. They never did that to me. I've always got the title right away. |

I heard about the 90-day trick here in Indiana. I called the BMV and got their story then called the little old lady at the toyota dealer (company HQ LOL), and she PROMISED me it would be in by tomorrow or the next day. By law I have the right to rescind the deal with 10 days notice after 21 days. But I like the car and feel that I got a good deal -- ESPECIALLY since the toyota recall occurred just two days after I traded in my toyota that was on the recall list for unintended acceleration. (And it DID accelerate, but with a gutless 1.8 liter engine and a manual transmission all I heard was a louder hum in 5th gear.) So I guess I'll wait. A competing F&I guy gave me the name of the lady at the credit union whose job it is to keep dealers in line, but I don't want to play that card until I have to. Her bank is holding the lien on my car so she has an interest in getting the title too. |
