Saturday Night Concert

Finally
Last Saturday, daughter #2 and I had a date.

We started out with dinner at Maders, a German restaurant that's been in business since 1902. She had the goulash, and I had the German sampler (Weinerschnitzel, Sauerbraten, Cabbage, a dumpling and ham). Too much food. Much, too much food.

We walked across the river to hear the Milwaukee Symphony. Edo DeWaart conducted an all Beethoven program. First was the Pastoral Symphony. Very VERY credible reading. He took it at a brisk tempo (which I like), and the orchestra was with him all the way. I never got the feeling (as I did with the Beethoven 9 last month) that things were reeling out of control. The horns and bassoons were amazing, and the "Storm" movement sent shivers up the back.

After intermission, Vadim Repin played the Violin Concerto. He seemed cool, detached, but, if you closed your eyes, there was a lot of passion in the music, even if not visible in the performer. The 1st movement cadenza (I believe by Kreisler) was amazing. Tons of double and triple stops, and yet, he was able to get the melody out above all the other stuff.

A good evening.

In June they're doing the Mahler 3rd. I'm ordering tickets tonight.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Nice program. Love both of those pieces.
Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Ah, the Pastoral.. probably my favorite piece of music ever. I was soooo jealous when George recorded it!

I love them as well, and I thought I'd be jaded, because I know them so well.

I wasn't.

DeWaart is under appreciated.

George, the link to Mader's makes me want to cook some German food again. Yes, it's time.

I just got some pumpernickel flour

to make some of this bread,

and some deli rye enhancer for bread.

Hubby has been asking for some of these.

Now I need to decide the menu. The Mader's site will be helpful. Thank you!
