So when I go to the library I study in the "commons" area where there are zillions of computers separated by fabric partitions. People must not think their conversations are being overheard but I've come to find out that the majority of people seem to be on Ritalin or other amphetamine salt stimulants. Apparently Aderol is the pill of choice for linear calculus and some physics classes. It's wierd hearing someone I admired (until now) talking on his cell phone to a friend saying "I hope it wears off by tonight because I have to get a good night's sleep for tomorrow." Sitting at the library you overhear stuff, and I've been hearing people compare Aderol to this or that etc. All you have to do is keep your ears open and you overhear stuff. It's bizarre. No wonder college is so much harder than it was when I was younger. It's full of people doping and they keep making it harder to accomodate the Ritalin crowd, which tend to be the highest acheivers and in the library the most. I am seriously thinking about writing to the chancellor about this. A simple urine test before exams would probably result in a majority testing positive for methamphetamine -- and probably a lot of GPAs plummeting. I wonder how pervasive ADHD is, AND how pervasive the drugs are for those who simply use them to steamroll to a 4.0? School is starting to scare me. Edited by Big John, Mar 8 2010, 01:19 PM.

Ritalin is, fortunately, an in-and-out drug. And it's less susceptible to habituation than garden-variety amphetamines. But you are correct ... in a school setting, it's a performance-enhancer. |

PROFESSIONAL athletes cannot. I know of no drug testing program for college or high school athletes, below the national championship level. |

It's insane. The people who do the stimulants party the most and get the best grades. I know of one kid who had an audition at a MAJOR conservatory recently and did carploads of Ritalin to prepare for it. He probably got accepted. I guess if you stay on it for life there's no telling how far you can go. |

Moreover, Ritalin isn't intended for use in athletics. It IS intended, however, for use by students to help them focus. Even if it's being used improperly, it has a proper purpose in a classroom setting. There was an episode of ER many years back where some young female doctor was on Ritalin, and stopped taking it, and suddenly was very disorganized and unable to concentrate or do her job as well. My understanding is, that can be an accurate picture. |

The latest thinking in the psychiatric profession is that ADHD (there is no separate ADD category any more, btw) is a developmental delay, and that they expect most people to outgrow their need for chemical enhancement when their brain development catches up to their body development. |

boy I'll tell you what. Invest in organ transplant technology because there's gonna be a lot of my peers needing liver and kidney transplants before they hit 40. These drugs aren't sugar pills. |

As far as I know, Ritalin present the same risk of liver damage as other drugs. I know that, if you're on Strattera, you're supposed to get a liver panel every year ... I don't believe that's true for Ritalin. (Strattera is a non-stimulant medication for ADHD. Works well for some people, with minimal side effects.) |

I think I suffer from ADHD. But I will never take any of these medications for it. I would rather just be a disorganized slob.

I took a **** ton of classes in college. 23 credits my last semester. I was a complete and total slacker, and only did enough to get by. My GPA was still pretty good and I never, ever had to rely on drugs to do so. I know of some who used them, though. College isn't full of Ritalin freaks but yeah, students use it. But it's not some sort of miracle drug, nor is it a necessity to perform well, that's just stupid. |

I had no idea. None. Not too worried about my kid doing something like that though. He won't even drink coffee. And he doesn't get too stressed about his classes.I'd be interested in knowing if the same thing is going on at ubc. I'll ask him next time I see him. |
