Good day for a ride; some DC pictures

Getting just a little bit warmer every week here. Today it was in the high 40s/low 50s so I took 3Jane out around the city. VERY nice ride. The weather was nice and there were a lot of people outside taking advantage.

I usually don't think to take pictures but I figured I'd post these to show what our nation's capital looks like these days. It's a prettier place than I give it credit for.

DISCLAIMER: These were taken on my camera phone while I was still on my bike. The quality's downright cruddy, I realize.

Believe it or not, THIS is the reflecting pool. Still drained from the winter so it's full of sludge and crap and you can actually walk in it. There were a lot of people running laps outside the rim.

Here's Barry's house. The road's still all kinds of blocked off and the perpetual cop convention's still taking place near the front, as you can see. I counted two snipers on the roof, can you find more?

Posted Image

The Capitol around sunset. There was a cop on a motorcycle doing (slow) donuts a few yards down. I asked him if he wanted to race but he declined. I suppose he was still on duty.

Posted Image

The Washington Monument near dusk. I thought I got the whole thing but alas, it was taller than I figured.

I like them! I take DC for granted, having gone there on countless field trips and girl scout trips, but it is a nice city, and a pretty important one, I might add! I was just talking to my mom, and I think I'm going to take the train and then metro to see her, instead of driving. For about $15 extra round trip comapred to driving, I can relax on a train and metro and take advantage of public transportation! Anyway, I have to switch from train to metro at Union Station, and I'm considering enjoying the city a bit. I never get tired of the National Art Gallery or the Natural History museum. They're free, and you learn something new every visit, so again, why not take advantage?
And how are you today?

Union Station's a cool place to kill an hour or so, too. They thought it was going to be The Traveler's Gateway to the city so they pulled out all the stops in its design.

I did hit up a couple art museums today as well, because c'mon, how could you not? I watched about 8 minutes worth of 4 different HUGE high definition screens, all meeting at the corners in various angles, displaying an elephant walking around inside a white room. The screens each were on the same time duration. Weird but oddly entertaining. They have huge, goofy feet, them elephants.

DC is such an incredibly cool town. Lots of assholes live there, but cool nonetheless.

YES THEY DO.

I've found though that on a bike, your interaction with them shortens to almost nothing.

Not you, mind you.

And on a bike, their impact is nil. I love to ride.

Yeah, the station itself it pretty cool too! I forgot - haven't been there in a long time. Oh, and the old Post Office.
And how are you today?

I went to the Caps game the other night.

I was reminded how they create gridlock in DC like nowhere else.

It's funny how the city behaves like it's well known elected cabal.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Liam desperately wants to go to the Smithsonian (thank you, Night at the Museum!). I've never been to DC. I'm thinking I may have to look into it.

I've been to the US many times, but never to DC. I'll try to make a sidetrip there next year.

Thanks, Aqua. Fun to see where people live, what part of the world they're in.

We spent last spring break there with another family, Dol. It's a lot of fun, there are a million things to do.

Oh, DC is great - it's my city. I know it fairly well, and still find new things to do. Definitely worth a visit. I'd say you'd want at least 3 nights if you want to experience the museums and other things instead of rushing through them.
And how are you today?

The sky west of DC looked like those pictures again today.

No pictures though - I was working with a student. The Blue Ridge was really nice today.

Oh yeah. Today was awesome. I planned on going in for a night ride this time, but got antsy and left around 2 pm. The weather was so great. There was a breeze around sunset but it was nice and warm. I ended up heading out around 8 pm (just got back) since my legs were spent from yesterday but today was really nice.

Raced some spandex-clad mofo on a souped up Felt on the road by the Smithsonian. Beat him to the Capitol. Bonus. ^_^
