I don't dare to extrapolate an appropriate word for your age :P

Punk rock become popular in the 80s, and it definitely falls into this category.
The superficial category?

I think he meant the "music that mattered to the listener" category, Aqua. Defending his position against the 60s and 70s that (ax?) suggested.

Check the indie scene, dude. There are people who would rather die than be caught listening to pop singers like Lady Gaga.
Few and far between, man. Not too many these days take music very seriously. For most it's just something to use to kill awkward silences or keep you occupied walking to the store.
Yeah, I suppose you're right. Unfortunately.

However, most of my friends take music very seriously. But it must be the people I hang out with. . . we're special. :D
Because you and your friends *listen to music*. 98% or more of the population is just content to hear tunes.

IT, does the Catholic church condemn this ubiquitous criminal activity?
Uh, yeah, Kenny -- the Catholic Church teaches that stealing anything is wrong. Did you really not know that?
Uh, then explain this.

snip

Moreover, the online survey of 1,448 teenagers showed that what a teen's moral perspective on music piracy was the most significant predictor of his or her engagement in music theft. The study, conducted for the Nashville, Tenn.-based Gospel Music Association (GMA), also discovered that the piracy-related views and behaviors of born again Christian teens are nearly the same as those of non-born again young people.

...

The study shows that born again Christian teens are not much different than are non-born again teens in terms of holding an anti-piracy moral position.
Just 10% of Christian teens believe that copying CDs for friends and unauthorized music downloading are morally wrong, compared to 6% of non-born agains (the four-point difference barely qualified as statistically significant).
Also, the proportion of pragmatists was statistically equivalent - 64% of born again Christians and 66% of non-Christians.

One of the most troubling findings of the survey was the fact that most teens opposed to music piracy are not entirely convinced that their perspectives are correct.
Just 1 in every 3 teens (36%) who take the piracy-is-wrong view said they feel very certain of that stance. That means just 1 out of every 50 American teens is strongly convinced that it is wrong to copy CDs for friends or to download music illegally.
To make matters worse, two-thirds of those teens who embrace piracy (64%) are convinced of their views.

What is to explain? You asked if the Catholic Church condemns music piracy, and then show what other people who are not Catholic do?

I don't know if the Catholic Church or any of those other denominations teach *explicitly* against music piracy, but presumably they do teach against stealing in general. All any church can do is make the case and try to teach -- the individual has to apply the teaching to his or her life.

I don't understand your point.

The subtleties and nuances of this issue make it very complex kenny but I'm going to try to break it down as best as I can understand it:

IF the Catholic Church teaches that stealing anything is wrong, AND some teenagers do it anyway, THEN we can assume that those teenagers are not listening to the Catholic Church on this issue.

I know! Totally crazy and nuts, right? But if you really think about it I think you'll find that it makes a crazy sort of sense. It's kind of related to the reputation teenagers have of getting into trouble with things.

Why has the religious community failed on this one?

Why are Christians not learning, "Thou shall not steal" applies to music?

Catholic, Christians, Born Agains, whatever group. Let go of Debating101, stick with the gist IT.

Because it doesn't. Because some people (myself included) don't consider it stealing.

With the last line you added, it is obvious to me that you are not looking for a discussion but only a fight. I answered as best as I can. You really don't want to talk about this but only provoke. I have better things to do.

Kenny, Christians would be among the first to say they aren't perfect and sin every day. Not every lesson taught in the bible is learned and even less are heeded. So your line of questioning shouldn't be limited to downloading music as if it's the only sin Christians commit.

Secondly, your question assumes sharing digital music files is stealing. There are many folks out there who would disagree with that characterization.

Apparently people pick and choose what part of a religion they care to follow.
When something is tempting and the odds of getting caught are low they do the wrong thing - unless you have good character.
I see character as what you do when nobody is looking.

What do Christian parents here teach?
DivaDeb
apple
Kincaid
KathyK
Larry
Jolly
Dewey (reply under 6 inches please)
Copper
Quirt Evans
Bachophile
Jeff
Anyone else?

If you are Christian, Jewish or any other religion, what do/will you teach your kids about illegal music downloading?

Do you just turn a blind eye on this one?
