Rep. John Murtha has been hospitalized in intensive care stemming from complications related to gallbladder surgery.

Spokesman Matt Mazonkey says the 77-year-old Pennsylvania congressman underwent scheduled surgery last week and is currently at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.

Murtha was also hospitalized in December with gallbladder problems.

The 19-term Democrat was the first Vietnam veteran to serve in Congress. He leads the powerful House Appropriations subcommittee on defense spending.

Wasn't he the one that falsely accused three Marines of war crimes?

like appendectomy, cholecystectomy can be a breeze and can be a son of a bitch.

in hundreds that ive done, ive had two duodenal perforations and some bile leaks, but thankfully ive never cut the common duct.

anyway...in oldies, gall bladder surgery can be very very tricky, esp after infection.

I'll bet it was done laparoscopically. I don't remember the last open chole I've done - must be over a year now. However, I know of at least one laparoscopic case (it was a gyne case) that went horribly wrong - bowel perf, not recognized, pt. returned to ER 48 hr post op with peritonitis. She didn't do well. She did as bad as you can do.

I wonder if Murtha had a bowel perf. Bad thing in a 77 year old.

Yep, 'scopic chole: http://www.vx50.com/latest-news/rep-john-murtha-in-icu-after-gallbladder-surgery/

But I hadn't considered common duct injury - probably more likely.

My wife does a lot of laparoscopic surgery. That initial punch is always a risk. In people who have had abdominal surgery before, it's especially complicated because adhesions may lead to organs being where they're not supposed to be. While you're in, you can't always see little errors.

Well, I'll be disappointed if this thread will not end with some serious mudslinging. But so far I am still confident.

Nope.

On an unrelated note, could somebody educate me what Noam Chomsky meant when he said:

I dunno. Context is everything. Chomsky decried the 9/11 attacks but thinks the US is a terrorist state.

"In much of the world the U.S. is regarded as a leading terrorist state, and with good reason. We might bear in mind, for example, that in 1986 the U.S. was condemned by the World Court for "unlawful use of force" (international terrorism) and then vetoed a Security Council resolution calling on all states (meaning the U.S.) to adhere to international law."
The dogma lives loudly within me.

Klaus, it is the Left that makes slurs about someone who is sick, dying, or has some sort of tragedy strike them, not the Conservatives.

I hope he pulls through and does well.

Then I hope he retires from politics.

How bad do you suck if even the Unabomber wanted your a$$ dead?

Quote:

Chomsky has received death threats because of his criticisms of US foreign policy. He was also on a list of planned targets created by Theodore Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber; during the period that Kaczynski was at large, Chomsky had all of his mail checked for explosives.
