I dunno, I always enjoy seeing someone hoisted on their petard. If you are going to run with a PC crowd, better be pristine and stay that way. They eat their own, you know.

I've seen Palin fumble around like a deer in the headlights, but I've not seen what goes around come around for her yet. For me, the joke falls flat without more explanation. However, if you can explain it I promise to laugh if I think it's a good one.

Since when is not using deliberately offensive language a matter of politician correctness? For conservatives it comes under "good manners" and "civil behavior".

Pffft. Are you serious? How many times have I heard people derided on this board because they take offense to some offensive language or other.

I have no problem with Palin's chagrine at the use of the word. But, let's not pretend that conservatives don't have their own PC sensibilities.

I think you miss the whole point of the charge against political correctness, which was that in order to be socially acceptable you had to bend over backwards to not say anything that anyone could take any offense to.

That for me has always precluded usages of terms that are deliberately intended to insult. Deliberately insulting people is an offense against common decency, not political correctness -- at least for conservatives.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Note, he did not call anyone retarded. Only the plan. And it was in a closed door meeting. I don't know why he even issued an apology.

Thank you Sarah for saving us from these bigoted maniacs running the White House. What would we do without thee?

He used the R word.

Not as bad as the N word, but getting close.

If you are R or have R relatives you can play the R card whenever it suits your purpose - like with the N word.

That's how PC works.

I like how she gets her knickers in a twist over the word "retarded" but is ok with the f word that preceded it. ^_^

such a bunch of nonsense. a closed door meeting, and it was about a thing, not a person. find something more important to write about on your facebook, Sarah.

I thought in politics everyone gets held to their own standard? That's why it's news when a Republican governor goes hiking on the Appalachian Trail but it's no big deal when a Democrat does it. Even though I couldn't care less about using the word retarded (it's one of my faves, BTW), I find it pleasurable to see Rahm get busted.

Palin calling him on it certainly is politics (the particularly fun kind) but she more than most have a special reason to do so.

That doesn't sit right with me. I don't think you should use your personal situation as a reason for being more offended by one word over another. Either you are offended by impolite remarks, (and that's fine) or you're not. I don't think you should pick and choose. Too much of the 'it's all about me' mentality, imo.

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble imagining that. Do you have a picture of yourself that might promote an understanding of the concept, and that you'd be willing to share?

Well, it is all about one's ox getting gored. FWIW, I'm sure she's about 60% political opportunist and 40% offended on this one. As for me, I don't get offended at much, but when something hits close too home I can't remain objective and blase about it. If I make an off color joke about (insert politically incorrect phrase/minority/special needs/Haitian refugee here) and someone has a connection to (insert same), I'm not going to tell them they are inconsistent in their reaction and that it's "all about them" - I'm going to apologize profusely about the offense.

Thank goodness for that! I certainly don't want to see pictures of you on Quirt's sweet patootie!

Just a plain old pole will be fine.
