Add Gran Torino to the list of brilliant movies that never even made the A list.
Brilliant movie? I beg to differ. It was a feel good type though, the way he handled the thugs throughout the movie, but Oscar worthy? meh.

Feel good? It opens at a funeral, a neighborhood is terrorized, a young woman beaten and raped, and he dies in the end. You and I have different views of "feel good". :lol2:

I think it was a very tight and compelling story, very well directed, excellent character development, very good cinematography, and above all entertaining. YMMV.
No, the only "feel good" stuff was his dealing with those black thugs harrasing the girl, and the various times he dealt with the Hmong gangsters. I was like, "kick his ass Clint!" And he did.

Ivory - it *would* have been a good movie IMO....except the acting was HORRENDOUS ('cept for Clint, of course). I know they used a bunch of first-time actors. And it showed.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I agree that some of the acting and dialogue was stilted, such as the barber shop scene.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

yup. His family, they all sucked in their roles, the Hmong actors, same. The only redeeming acting was Clint's.

Movietickets.com did a poll and here are the results for biggest Best Picture upsets of all time:

5. How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane (12%)
I suspect this is largely knee-jerk for polls conducted today, since we've all been told Citizen Kane is the greatest movie ever. It is fantastic. But I doubt the people voting on those two films have seen How Green Was My Valley, which was also excellent.

That's back when people had real imaginations, and went to see movies called "How Green Was My Valley" in black & white.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

What's imagination?
Isn't it some crappy Latoya Jackson song?
I cite irreconcilable differences.
