Only seen The Hurt Locker....it was very good. Maybe not Best-Pic worthy, but very good. I didn't see as many movies this year with all the races and condo buying taking up my time. I also dont like how they've changed it to 10 nominees now....but I'll get used to it. |

None. I'm catching up on zillions of superb films streaming on Netflix. $10 per month instead of $10 (+popcorn) for one film.

I've only seen Up and Inglourious Basterds. I loved both of them, in different ways obviously. My daughters huge eyes as she asked me what had happened to the girl who starred in the first 10 minutes or so of UP was something I won't forget in a hurry. It's probably a good job I didn't take her to see Inglourious Basterds. |

I'm surprised to see Inglorious Basterds nominated, I thought it another Tarrantino fantasy. But I'm glad Christoph Waltz was nominated from the movie, he was excellent. I've only seen three of the Best Picture nominees so far (Up, IB, D9), Avatar I'll probably see at the cinema, and the rest are in the Netflix queue. Foreign nominees, I haven't seen any of them yet, but I already had The White Ribbon (Das Weiße Band: Eine Deutsche Kindergeschichte) in my Netflix queue. I've added the others as well. |

It is entirely possible, likely actually, I will never again set a foot in another movie theater. Who was it, Luke's Dad?, who wrote that he has no problem with the price of movie theater popcorn. If this Netflix trend catches on theater popcorn may cost $20 soon. Then $30. . . |

The only one I'm not so sure if I want to watch is La teta asustada (The Milk of Sorrow). I'll let someone else watch it first and see what they think. Here's the Netflix description:

UP ftw! Inglourious Basterds only got the nod because of the politics of Hollywood. It was fun, but hardly a Best Picture. However, Christoph Waltz deserves Best Supporting Actor. |

Have seen IB, UP, District 9, Up in the Air, and Avatar. I enjoyed all of them but don't think any are worthy of a best picture nod. But then again, it all depends on what other films they're up against. I'm amazed how everyone is gaga over Avatar. I'd take Inglorious Bastards over it if it came to it. UP was cute, but again, not a best picture film. District 9 was a very original scifi story, and Up in the Air was another (look at me, I'm the great George Clooney) forgetable movie. The only flick I enjoyed with him is Oh Brother, where art thou. Going to go see the Hurt Locker next. Heard it was good. Edited by Nobody's Sock, Feb 2 2010, 01:00 PM.

You know, I think the first 10 minutes of UP is about the best cinematography to come out of Hollywood since the Godfather "baptism" montage. |

It was amazing. I was also reminded of the brief opening sequence of Rear Window, in which panning around the room tells you so much about the main character. I see attempts at this in other movies, usually rushed and heavy handed -- remember the opening sequence of the American version of State of Play. We just laughed at their attempt. |

I rented District 9 on in Demand the other night. I turned it off after about 20 minutes - it was disgusting. Lots of vomiting and fingernails falling off, not fun. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

True, some of their choices seem strange. I don't especially pay attention to the awards themselves, but the nominations give me a chance to catch up on movies I've missed during the year. For example, we hadn't seen The Visitor until Richard Jenkins was nominated for it last year. |

BTW, wasn't five the usual number for Best Picture nominations? 2009 had five nominations, 2008, 2007 . . . etc. |
