4dr - Cobalt Blue - auto - sunroof. Paid about $28K after taxes, license, etc.

1st tank of diesel - 37 mpg
2nd tank - 43 mpg
still working on the third tank.

The purchase happened kinda fast, but we'd done our research and are quite happy with the car so far.

Daughter gets the '01 Subaru Forrester (she gets her permit at the end of Feb, but that's a different story).

Guess this makes me green huh!

Gratz on the ride, Dan! One of my co-workers drove a Golf and she gave me a ride home a couple of years ago. I was impressed with fit, finish, and how "German" the car was. Very nice!

Oh, and mileage? You'll make Kenny jealous.

Exciting, Dan! That sounds like a great ride.

I bet your daughter is very excited, as well. :D

HOLY CARP!!!
Contrats on the new car, and on working on a climbing MPG score. :thumb:

BTW I've never had a Prius.
There are other hybrids.

Here's my MPG when I pulled up into my driveway after a full day of driving including "racing" in that hybrid rally.

Yep, I'm just weeping with jealosy. :weeping: Posted Image Dust away. :P

Hey Dan, congrats! Until a few years ago I owned a 1994 Golf Diesel - it drove without any major hassles for 13 years and 200,000 miles. Now I have a TDI, too - not a Golf but a Passat TDI.

With the right driving technique you can easily get into the 50+mpg range.

Do you have automatic transmission or manual shift? If you want to save gas, the manual shift has more possibilities.

Hmm. Does it get up and go when you put your foot in it? Without sounding like it's going to fall to pieces (reference: my daughter's Hyundai, other little cars), or does it have that confident, engine revving in sync w/ powertrain growl?

Dan, cool! Congrats.

I have a 2001 Jetta TDI that I adore. It's the best little car and gets GREATS mileage. Around town I get about 45 mpg; the best I did on the highway was 57 but I was really babying it. I have a standard trans which gives me an edge; I coast a lot since I don't do much city driving. It's built like a baby tank and I've never had to put any money into other than routine maint. The oil changes are a bit pricey, about $50 at the dealer, but I'm sure you're going to love your new Golf for many years. My only complaint about the car is that the heater takes longer to warm up on winter mornings than a gas engine but the heated seats make up for that. :D

Oh, I have 227k miles on the Jetta and it's going strong. I'm excited for you.

Thanks all.

Klaus - It is an automatic transmission, but it can be put into 'sport' mode where shifting is controlled either with the stick shift or with paddle shifters on the wheel.

Kenny - When I wrote down 'Prius' a little voice said "That's not what he has". But I couldn't remember what you've got. Is it an Insight? Anyway, the 'dusting' I was crowing about is acceleration and top end, not mileage!

Mik - It doesn't growl like a V8 (what does anyway), but it's solid, engine sounds good, and when you tromp on the gas it'll push you back in your seat no matter what speed you're going. Gotta love the turbo!

I'll get some photos tonight to post. Wife gets to drive it to work so I'll have to wait till she gets home.

I'm glad to hear from those of you who've put 200K plus miles on your TDI's. That's our plan as well. And yes, the heated seats are something my wife has already fallen in love with on these cold Colorado mornings.

More to follow. . .

P.S for Patti. The dealer is doing all oil changes and maintenance for the first 30K miles, so it will be a while before I have to shell out for that.

I think it makes you smart. I had a VW diesel many, many moons ago...one of the best cars I ever owned.

It's the car (the new VW diesel) I would buy for commuting, if I had the money....
