Hmmm.....

http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/02/01/apple-tablet-os-x-ipad/
Quote:

the information we’re hearing is that Apple is thinking much larger for another version of the product, maybe all the way up to the 15.4″ size that it currently uses for one version of the MacBook Pro. If you think that would be way too big for an iPad, we’re also hearing that this other tablet would be quite a bit different from the one revealed last week. Namely, it could run a version of OS X much closer to the traditional version that runs on Macs.

If there is any truth to that, we could learn something as soon as Apple’s WWDC event this year, which will likely take place in June (just as it does every year). Apple typically uses the event to show off its new iPhone hardware, but it is first and foremost an event for Mac platform developers, and the past two years have seen OS X as a major component. This included two years ago when Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) made a surprise appearance and developers got a very early peek. There is already talk that WWDC 2010 could bring a similar peek at OS X 10.7. If there are some significant multi-touch components to OS X 10.7, you can expect the rumors to start flying about this new device that I’m talking about (or possibly touchscreen iMacs).

How about a Camera?

Quote:

Repair company Mission Repair has posted images of what is supposedly the iPad outer frame. While the iPad is not yet shipping, the company seems to have gotten a supply of iPad parts through unofficial channels. Identical photos have been circulating on other websites. Assuming these are actual iPad parts, it appears that Apple did build in a space for a camera at the top of the device.

The photo above is particularly convincing as the iPad frame is compared to a MacBook frame which does house a camera. The holes seem identical. Even if this is all true, Apple ultimately chose not to include a camera from the first version of the iPad. The iPad will begin shipping in late March.

I suppose a camera would be useful for video chat, although you're gonna need a stand. But for taking pictures? Useless. Who wants to hold up something the size of a legal pad to take a picture?

Since I don't do video chat, the camera adds no value to me. However, a full or semi-full version of the operating system would be a big upgrade.

YESSSS!!!! If they make it bigger and it will run a 'real' OS....I'm buying it even if I have to sell a bunch of other stuff to do it. There is a software available for Mac OS that makes it possible for a laptop or tablet to operate like one of these, complete with tools to mark up your music:

But a bigger iPad would hold soooooooo much more music. The MusicPad Pro doesn't hold much at all, costs 900 bucks and doesn't do anything but display music, so to have a fully functioning computer with the capacity to hold all my music would be worth quite a few bucks. It would hold enough music that I would never ever have to haul a bag with me again. PRAISE JESUS WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH!!!!!!! -

Yes there is a market. It should be able to dominate the Kindle.

I think the Kindle and the iPad are no real competitors.

The Kindle display technology is vastly different and serves a different purpose, namely to have the same look as a printed text.
It also needs no power - you can remove the power and the image is still there. This means there is much more potential for
a device that can operate for weeks without recharging.

The iPad is more universal and you can do many things with it that you cannot do with an eBook reader such as the Kindle.
But as an eBook reader it is likely very inferior to Kindle et al.

+1. The two are entirely different and were made to serve different purposes. One is an electronic reader, and the other was, uh.... well it has apps, and... well whatever it's an iProduct so I'm sure we're all going to offer up our firstborns for one.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Since you don't have any children, I'd be grateful if you didn't offer us some of the next closest thing.

There are differences, but not vast.

If you are thinking of buying a Kindle you have to ask yourself - why not an iPad?

Maybe for some the answer will be you want it to look just like a book, but a lot of people will be willing to live without that.

Kindle is made to be better with eBooks, but the iPad can do so much more (in theory).

Kindle
Price: $399
Size: 7.5-in. x 5.3-in. x 0.7-in.
Weight: 10.3 ounces
Display: 6-in. screen, 4-level grayscale (black and white)

iPad
Price: $499 - $829
Height: 9.56 inches (242.8 mm)
Width: 7.47 inches (189.7 mm)
Depth: 0.5 inch (13.4 mm)
Weight: 1.5 pounds
9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

Then why not get a netbook. They all do a ton more and costs less.

Right, the iPad price seems too high compared to a notebook.

And too low compared to a Kindle.

Which way you go depends on which features are important.

That's the thing, though. All the tech magazines and literature are saying "here's what we can expect for the next generation iPads." And they're all saying that these features are worth waiting for, and should have been introduced in the beginning. So what the hell's up with the lame ass first generation version? Why the hell not start with these things?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

probably so they could launch the thing at a lower price...but as to "why not buy a netbook"...for me, the tablet format is crucial to what I need the thing to do. Cannot put laptop computer on the music stand of the piano to play. I have an Asus laptop...if I could use it, I would, it's a spectacular computer.
