I've never been. I'm going to go. Sept 2010. It's a one time shot. I'll likely never get there again. Kauai. Po'ipu region. Southern tip I believe. This area is a definite. Has anyone stayed in this area? Has anyone good hotel recommendations? If so, will you kindly PM me? The kiddo is doing his first Half marathon [he doesn't know that yet, .. heh, but mommy signed him up]; I'm doing 26.2. Oh, anyone want to join us? And no, you don't have to run it. You could walk it or just watch. ![]() |

I was on 3 ocean beaches in my life. I think. Near Cape Cod when I was 10 [I burnt]; Gulf Shores x 10 minutes in February '95; and South Beach x 2 hours in 2006. I'm landlocked, aging and over-due. |

I Owe It All To John D'Oh

I've been to Kauai, but it was a long, long, LONG time ago. Doubtless everything has changed since then. The only thing I remember is this: Buy Snorkel Bob's guide to the islands. It used to be sold at Snorkel Bob stores in Hawaii, but apparently it's available on the mainland now. http://www.amazon.com/Snorkel-Bobs-Reality-Guide-Hawaii/dp/1883697956 According to the Amazon reviews, though, there's a more recent edition that isn't on Amazon. Aside from being very informative, it's the funniest read you'll have while you're there. Have fun! |

MS and I had a wonderful time in Kauai -- I think someone here even saved my hulu dancing photos. The whole island is very accessible along the coastal road. Rent a car. We stayed at a time share (Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy) which was right next to a great shopping area called Coconut Grove that have wonderful restaurants and sandwich shops and a Lappert's Coffee (then best espresso!). The premier hotel seems to be the Kauai Marriott at Nawiliwili Bay, which is a wonderful swimming bay. Great snorkeling and tropical fish also at Poipu. We especially enjoyed the dark chocolate tasting tour at Steelgrass Farms http://www.steelgrass.org/ Highly recommended! The trip up to Waimea Canyon and Koke'e is spectacular scenery. We spend just a bit of time on the North Shore -- Princeville/Hanalei -- and it was pretty overcast and cold when we were there, but is really is beautiful and worth another trip. You will have a wonderful time! |

We were there in 2008. We LOVED the snorkeling at Poipu Beach! Wow! And the fresh fish, the Kona coffee, the sights, all amazing. Yes, do visit Steelgrass Farms in Kapaa. They take you on a tour of the organic farm and you taste samples of exotic fruits right from the trees. The tour ends in a dark chocolate tasting of single origin chocolates. |

I spent a day there at the canyon rim near the NASA tracking station taking some fantastic pictures. Then when I was finished I realized that the film hadn't been wound properly and there were no pictures. So I recommend a digital camera. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Okay, I'll stop ignoring you IT, but that's only b/c I read the word "chocolate" in your post. Tease. Post the hula pics & I'll post my own. No tease. I'll look up the K. Coast Resort. The Marriott would be perfect [I collect points] but is too far from the start-finish. I need that southern tip. The Hyatt could be too pricey for us. Frick, the whole thing is very pricey. Snorking? I've never done that before. Stupid question, but what of stinging, snacking fishie things? Should a person worry? Oh, and does the kid have to be a stellar swimmer to snorkel? I think 89th should bring the GF, do the proposal; Copper brings the camera to document it; & Sue can drink herself silly on the beach & post about it. I'll simply sweat walking & running this thing. I see no one wants to run or walk to kill some calories .. The one downside of the marathon are the elevations. No doubt Kluurs would check that. But the half seems relaxing.Quirt, I'll get the hubby to get the book. THank you. ![]() |

NO!!! you don't even have to be all that good at floating to snorkel, because the fins make it so easy. basically you're just floating, looking down and gently flapping your fins. It's magic when you're in tropical waters and see things. edit. oh and sue can't sit on the beach and drink herself silly anymore. that's for crazy young people. I would be happy to report on all events, make up stories, etc.

The snorkeling was in shallow water, maybe waist deep, behind a reef so the water was calm and full of colorful fish. We brought our own snorkeling gear but you can rent it as well. |

At my weight, I should be very buoyant. Thanks IT, MS, et al. I was real hesitant of this. The whole Hawaii thing confuses me. I haven't done any real vacations before. |

This place, the Koa Kea Hotel & Resort looks nice. Not cheap though. Near the beach, which is important, I think.

Have you checked priceline? There are packages from Phoenix to Kauai for a week in Sept for about $900/ week including airfare. I would be surprised if, from where ever you are departing, that it would be much more. |
