In late March (fri. the 26th or sat. the 27th don't have the program handy) there's a concert at school (4 blocks) featuring Alexander Toradze, who is leaving to go on tour in Europe tnext month and will be also be playing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with the London Philharmonic in Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday, March 7. He will likely play that at the concert here in late March. His studio is chock full of classical piano acrobats from all over the world. You've never seen such playing. We could have a get-together at my place and diddle on the Steinway before experiencing the two dovetailed 9-foot Steinway D's at school -- one from New York, the other from Hamburg. Both impeccable. Tickets are cheap. I can buy blocks for only $3 apiece with advance notice. It could be an amazing evening. Any interest? here's the bio on lexo and his studio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Toradze Edited by Big John, Feb 1 2010, 08:29 PM.

Toradze is great. I have a recording of him playing the Prokofiev PC #2. The cadenza in the 1st movmt is incredible. If it weren't 5000 miles or so I'd come to your party

I'd love to make it, John. The drive isn't too bad, but I'm on call on the 28th (Sunday) and I have to be within 15 minutes of work on Saturday and Friday. Klaus, just floor the VW, you'll make it in no time. |

That's one of the best recordings of that piece out there. Here's a live version of him playing the cadenza. A little more innacurate, but very powerful. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

Big John, I don't know exactly where you are (which town/city/zip-code), hence I don't know where you intend to have this party. Kindly send me your location over PM or e-mail, ok? Thanks. |

I live in South Bend, Indiana -- home of the infamous University of Notre Dame. I am about an hour and a half east of Chicago. There is direct and frequent train service here. This is the end of the line of Chicago's longest commuter rail line. Why dont' you come? We have an airport here that is linked/served by most of the major airlines and there are daily non-stops from Vegas and South Florida (Allegiant). |

I missed Toradze when he played here with the Evansville Philharmonic a couple of years ago, but I did see him when he first appeared here in 1977. He played Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto and smoked the piano. As I recall, he was accompanied by Soviet "translators" (otherwise known as KGB) and apparently knew the English language better than his...er...translators.

I have the official date now: Friday March 26th at 7:30 pm Eastern time (chicago is on central time remember even though it's only 2 hours away). We could have a get-together at my place beforehand and perhaps a light meal or go to one of a gazillion local restaurants for some grub. I have a unique setup -- a 1958 Steinway M with a PianoDisc player with the MX feature (650 built-in songs in 12 genres), and a Roland Atelier AT90R console organ circa 2003 or so. They are right next to each other. Kind of nice to have. Hope to see as many of you as possible. I will firm up times and stuff. |

God no. I may pay the little lady across the way who cleans apartments for new tenants to come in and give it a woman's touch. My decorating skills are nonexistent. I never got that gene. People politely call my apartment "eclectic."
