If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

J.D. Salinger, Author of 'The Catcher in the Rye,' Is Dead at 91 J. D. Salinger, who was thought at one time to be the most important American writer to emerge since World War II but who then turned his back on success and adulation, has died in Cornish, N.H., where he lived in seclusion for more than 50 years, his son told The Associated Press. He was 91. Mr. Salinger's literary reputation rests on a slender but enormously influential body of published work: the novel "The Catcher in the Rye," the collection "Nine Stories" and two compilations, each with two long stories about the fictional Glass family: "Franny and Zooey" and "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction." |

“I hope to hell that when I do die somebody has the sense to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetary. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody.” I always liked Salinger.

It's certainly part of his temperament. I don't think he was very much of a "people person."

I still think "Catcher In The Rye," really sucked. It wasn't about anything. Nihilistic, narcissistic garbage. Feh... I had such high hopes for it, when I started reading it. When I finished it, I was so disappointed. It was the literary equivalent of getting socks and underwear for Christmas. |

I never read "Catcher" or anything by Salinger. The book was on our grade 12 syllabus but we had a choice of two of five books on the list. I chose Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning and Chaim Potok's My Name is Asher Lev. |

Was it his writing style you didn't like or the story itself? You could always try Nine Stories. They're shorts so if you don't like one, pfft, on to the next. |

I liked his writing style. In fact, a more contemporary writer that writes in a very similar style, is Haruki Murakami. My problem with "CITR" is that the story didn't GO anywhere. It meandered, and the protagonist was always and only focused on his boring and stupid little self. The book may be okay compared to a lot of other garbage I've read, but it certainly doesn't rank up there as "OMFG!! IT'S A CLASSIC!!" I may try "Nine Stories," in the future... Like I said, I like his writing style. It was the only saving grace to "CITR," IMHO. |

Bunch Of Phonies Mourn J.D. Salinger CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything. |
