I'd have to agree with Will that nothing that Reid said in that one comment was racist. However, that doesn't mean Reid is not racist. I think he is. What's kind of funny in this entire issue is that no one is focusing on what he meant when he indicated that Obama could have affect a black dialect if he wanted. I also think it's funny that so many self-proclaimed blacks are coming out of the woodwork on the internet to rehabilitate the moniker of "negro". Guess that will soon be okay to say again. |

I noticed that no one's commented on that aspect of the quote, too. But I know what Reid was talking about; I've noticed that in Obama's public speaking. When he's giving a speech to certain groups, he affects a lofty sort of Martin Luther King sing-song tone, and his pronunciation changes slightly - for example, the "y"s at the end of words no longer sound like long "E"'s, but they become softer "eh"s, much like the pronunciation that Dr. King's soft Southern accent produced. If he's speaking in a smaller or more supposedly intellectual setting, not just his tone or phrasing changes, but the very pronunciation of the various sounds. |
