There was another official makig claims of 500,000 dead. I'm ignoring the projections, and will await the hard facts.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

No matter what the number, it is an unimaginable tragedy.

I saw a quote from someone who survived: today the important became unimportant.

I always wonder why it takes so long to get help in. The military should have already used C-130's to drop in some construction crews with bulldozers, to clear airstrips for C-130's and C17's. Then the waves of relief can begin. Returning aircraft can bus those requiring hospital treatment to cities along the US Gulf coast, South America, etc....

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that understand binary and................

Awful. The only thing that benighted land has to lose is Haitians.

Truly heartbreaking. Wondering what to do to help. I guess all there really is to do is send some money. I wish I had millions. I just got a solicitation through CREDO for Doctors w/o Borders whose 3 primary medical centers in Port Au Prince have collapsed, but they carry on setting up emergency centers. I think that's where I'll direct my offering. Every little bit helps.

Another great way of getting money to relief efforts. Hat tip to Elena at Facebook:

For Red Cross, I just saw this, which I confirmed to be valid: at&t wireless users: if you text the word Haiti to the number 90999 a $10 donation will be made to the Red Cross International Relief Fund. The charge will appear in your next cell phone bill. For more info go to att.com.

I Googled Verizon, and they are doing exactly the same.

Regarding the death toll, I mentioned in another thread I remember the 2004 tsunami death toll was originally projected at 10k, then 50k, then 100k, and eventually 300k direct deaths and another million related deaths.

Either way...this is incredibly mind-boggling and sad.
