I Owe It All To John D'Oh
|
The Quirtlets have a classmate, a boy, who has been having foot problems. What the doctors are doing seems pretty alarming, so I thought I'd ask you guys what's up. The background ... sometime in late November or early December, he hurt one foot. It lasted a few weeks. This is a kid who does karate every day of the week, and he's very active, so it was a real crimp in his lifestyle. Then, over the holidays, as the first foot improved, he hurt the other foot. His mother thought he might have hurt it by limping around on the first foot. In frustration, she took him to an orthopedist at Children's Hospital in Boston. The first visit, which was last week, they took x-rays and did blood work (?), but didn't tell her anything. They scheduled him for an MRI and a bone scan this week. (?????) And they put him one of those removable soft casts, with crutches. Today was the MRI and the bone scan. They took the MRI. Then, just as he was about to get the injection for the bone scan, someone came in and said stop. The doctor reviewed the MRI from surgery in Boston, and had apparently seen something on the MRI. (?????) They canceled the bone scan, and were going to do a CT scan, but decided instead to do an MRI on the OTHER foot with die injected, to compare the two ankles. What the hell do they suspect, and what are they looking for? They haven't told his mother anything, they don't see the doctor until Friday, and she's panicking. My friend who works at Children's (in a non-medical capacity) said, before today's MRI, uh oh, a bone scan, that's not good, but that's all I know. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Quirt, she need not get upset just yet. Lots of pretty mundane stuff.

I suspect they are just being extremely cautious, Quirt. |

HOLY CARP!!!
|
That concerns me right there. I suspect that's not advisable for a growing kid. |

ZOOOOOM!
|
I think it can be okay, if the kid (and his parents, instructor, etc.) are being smart about it. Not over-exerting one's self, taking injuries seriously, etc. is important but I also think kids in some ways can handle this sort of exercise better than adults. Just have to make sure it's done properly. I'm with the others. I have no freaking clue why they're doing what they're doing but it sounds like it's being done out of an abundance of caution. |

sorry not up to date on pediatric ortho. bone scans are quite non specific, will pick up trauma and infection as well as neoplasms. maybe the mri showed something which made the bone scan irrelevant, but still needed comparison to other side, or maybe just to see if it was an artifact or a real finding. maybe the mri showed something in the joint capsule which maybe the bone scan is blind to. too many unknowns, but whats common is common. many more kids batter and bash their feet then get bone cancer. |
