Awful. Had no idea that was a seismic zone.

I know. So much trouble heaped on that poor country.

interestingly, im reading now michael crichton's last book, pirate lattitudes (published posthumously) which is a pirate tale, centered around the city of port royal jamaica, a bawdy las vegas style city which basically disappeared of the map and sank after a huge earthquake in the caribbean in 1692 (and the city of kingston rose up afterwards as a replacement)

i guess the carib is also pretty seismic.

big stuff...they say also the presidential palace has been destroyed...

anyone remember papa doc duvalier...?

Global seismic hazard map. Interesting. The whole of Iran is at high risk.

China is the one I worry about. Shanghai has grown to immense proportions with hundreds of 30 story plus buildings made of reinforced concrete (constructed to Chinese standards). Their next big one could kill a lot of people. About those Chinese standards, the installation crew we used in China frequently had to drill holes through those concrete walls and they were surprised at how easily their hammer drills walked through those walls.

The Graham Greene novel 'The Comedians' is a very effective and affecting description of life under tyranny - one of my favourite books.

The poor people of Haiti really have suffered horribly.

I just saw some pictures from the news and it looks like serious devastation down there.

Let's hope there will be a flood of humanitarian aid coming their way....it looks like they'll need all the help they can get.

The disparity between Haiti and the DR has always been astounding. Here's praying that the loss of life isn't as bad as feared, and that the international aid can help alleviate some of the suffering of the survivors.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I cannot imagine the shear number of people killed, wounded, and those now homeless. Seriously mind-boggling...just like the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Remember the tsuanmi death toll was originally at 10,000. Then 50k. Then 100k. Eventually it reached 300k +.

Horrible.

This is just a side comment, but when huge calamities like this happen I sometimes think about what I was doing when the disaster struck. I wasn't even the slightest bit aware of something happening until I turned on the news; just going through my day. It's weird to think that something this awful can happen and have it barely register with the rest of the world. Doesn't seem right, in a way.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

My advisor/professor and some of my classmates are there right now. Found out this morning that they weren't in Port-au-Prince when the earthquake hit; they're currently in Jacmel, about 100 miles out of the city, and apparently all safe, but not much else is known at present.

That's good news. I'm sure they're working as hard as they can right now.
