The best thing about this is that it should drive the price of regular HD TV's down even further.

Great. I just got a new LED TV. :rolleyes2:

Well, I'm always about five years behind, technologically, so that's OK. I'm usually content to wait until the second or third generation of whatever new gizmo or gadget appears. By that time the problems are identified and the idea matures.

I suspect that the idea of sitting in the lounge wearing those stupid glasses might be quite hard to sell.

I have to agree. I frequently multi-task while the TV is on and it would be a bitch groping around on the coffee table for something with those things on.

Sorry, 3D home TVs will not catch on for a VERY long time, if ever. HDTVs will dominate for many decades. (Plasma, LCD, OLED, etc, etc....not 3D)

Saving this prediction. If we're both still here in 2015, you'll be eating your "many decades" words.

I think 3D for gaming might be an easier sell. Gaming is a more involved activity than watching TV in the first place, and the benefits are more immediately obvious. A flight simulator, driving game or first person shooter in 3D would be freaking awesome.

Me, my 42" flat-screen LED TV and Netflix are very happy together, thank you very much. I have no intentions to switch. :smokin:

I think this is spot on.

Now recall to which generation 89th belongs, and do the same for Quirt. :whome:

Just a touch of irony, n'est-ce pas.

I agree gaming in 3-D has more potential than TV programming. And I stand by my many decades comment....although I admit new technologies (we haven't thought of yet) may come out to take the HDTV to new levels. Just not 3-D, it's too headache-y and need-special-glasses-y to really catch on. Yes, those are adjectives.

In 2020, 89th will be using those very technologies. Mark my words.

Long term, we'll have all sorts of info, including video content, beamed directly into our brains. Don't even need eyes for that, much less funny glasses of TV.

I think it was John Maynard Keynes ... he made some point, someone tried to contradict it by saying that, "in the long run," ... and Keynes responded, "in the long run, we're all dead."

3-D gaming? Pretty much all of the games that I have seen are 3-D. The difference is that you don't have to get out of your comfy chair to get the 3-D effect. Manipulating the joystick rotates the image. Now if we have 3-D TV's, then presumably one would have to actually move their head (or even move their body) to see behind an object. I'll take the comfy chair approach. :sombrero:

Oh yeah - as far as the special glasses. Typically 3-D glasses have either used a different colour for each eye, or used 2 polarisers rotated at 90 degrees. The polariser glasses would allow you to do normal things - except work on a laptop (as the LCD screen uses a polariser), though they would tend to darken everything. The 2 colour filter glasses would probably be annoying, but it is surprising what your brain can compensate for.

Current games aren't true-3D, it's just a 2D projection of a 3D object, even though you can move in a simulated 3D universe. In order for the game to become truly 3D the video card will need to supply to separate polarized images to the PC screen or TV. It's going to happen pretty soon, from what I understand of the latest video cards.

Yeah, I'm out.

I watch a lot of news and the idea of catching Rick Sanchez or Sean Hannity in 3D in my living room, frankly, terrifies me.

Well CRT to HDTV...clear difference. Depends if you watch a lot of sports and movies, though.
