Gas Furnace Fail

A couple of days ago my son was visiting and commented that I had a "sad bearing" in the furnace. I could hear it too. Today the heater failed to come on. The draft inducer blower had frozen. The bearing is no longer sad, it is dead. I'm going to shop around town early tomorrow to see if anyone near us has the part at a less than insane price. Otherwise, I'll have to wait a few days to get the part through Amazon. It's kind of strange that Amazon has turned into a place to buy all sorts of things (almost as many as Ebay), but it is much better than the bad old days when an appliance parts store could charge $350 for a $75 part and get it because there wasn't anywhere else to go.

this is what I love about renting. I have a very responsive landlord. They shovel, salt, plow, and respond to everything quickly. With the brand-spanking new central air unit I got over the summer, I've amortized my rent into huge savings over buying -- for now. I still hate common walls though except that when the furnace goes and it's -4 like it is now, the neighbors heat can keep the place at 60.

I feel for ya man. I'm sure I'll rejoin the ranks of home-indebtedness again one of these days. I want a garage for my tools. They don't look good in the living room.

Wow, that bearing was so depressed he finally offed himself. :)

Anyway, good luck Joe. In the mean time, how cold is it in your house?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
The place I am in now has radiant floor heat which is nice and uniformly warm. No cold spots. The floor is all tile, and even at 9 outside I'm barefoot and in shorts.

My sympathies for the lost of your bearing in this most inopportune season, JoeB. :(

About "radiant floor heating" ... can any one comment on the costs (installation/start-up cost as well as longer term operating and maintenance costs) of that versus forced hot air and water bass board?

Thanks in advance.

Joe - is there a Johnstone Supply near your place?

They'll probably have that motor and the prices are pretty good.

I looked into it when I was having work done on the house.

It's expensive to put in new construction, very expensive if you're doing remodeling.

Nice, though.

Not too bad. The weather been getting down into the 40s recently, but the house stayed warmer than I expected. I ran an electrical heater in the bedroom last night and even on low it got too warm. It would have been worse in a couple of weeks when the temps will probably be dropping tnto the 20s at night. Heat is not really an emergency here in Sacramento.

There is one but I didn't find a cross in Johnstone's on-line catalog. I went ahead and ordered the inducer through Amazon.

Joe, I hope you are keeping warm. It could be worse. You could be in Minnesoooota temperatures.
