Bought a Canon Rebel XSi. ![]() I've been looking at getting a DSLR for some time now, and finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. I didn't want to spend more than a thousand bucks and this one seemed to get tremendous reviews (along with a couple other Canon and Nikon cameras I was looking at). After seeing a good deal, I ordered this one and it should be here soon. My friend has one, and this weekend she was showing me all the options it has. I'm very excited to see what new photos this thing will bring me, especially on upcoming vacations or even going around DC to take pictures. Figured you'd like to know!

What lens(es) did you get with it? Stay with Canon lenses if possible. |

Kenny, you keep your mind in your camera bag? I guess that's better than where some other folks keep theirs. |

I had my 50D modified. I had the stock IR filter removed and replaced with one that permits a lot more of the red spectrum through to the sensor. This mod made it much more sensitive to hydrogen lines which are very prevalent in astrophotography. Now whenever I take terrestrial photos, I have to find something white and take an out of focus photo and fill the frame with the out of focus white object to use as a custom white balance setting for the current lighting situation else all my photos have a very red tint to them. I shoot everything in RAW format so if I do happen to forget to do the custom WB or there is no white object handy, I can correct the WB in DPP or Photoshop. |

Incidentially somebody bought us a Canon EOS 500D (I think it is called EOS Rebel T1i in the US) with the 17-50mm kit lens for my wife's (!) last birthday. Grand parents are sometimes quite eager to see pics of their grandchilds... ![]() Needless to say that I already spent more money on accessories than what the camera has cost. By now, I have bought a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens, two (!) tripods, a flash, a Lowepro camera backpack, and UV filters to protect the lenses. I intend to buy another lens, most likely a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 (or the 12-24mm) wide angle lense. It turned out (for me at least) that one can easily spend a fortune on accessories. And once you get a little more serious, the "need" for more and better equipment arises. For example, I have secretly observed myself thinking about full-frame cameras such as the EOS 1D Mark III, or a fast Canon 200-500mm zoom lens. I force myself to stop when my thoughts deviate on topics such as a Leica M9 or even a Hasselblad H series medium format camera.

My mom's side of my family is flush with creative juices, art, photography, etc...and I think I may have taken a few photography genes from her, or at least the desire to take nice photos. So far I've maxed out as much as my Canon Powershot point-n-shoot can do, so hopefully this SLR opens up some new windows! |

Right now the Canon 18-55mm IS lens that comes with it. Should do the job for quite a while I think. |

You will quickly want more reach than the 18-55 provides. |

From my little experience, I think that the Canon 18-55 IS is better than what you can read in most places. But it is easy to get to the limits of this lens. If you have low light, you'll miss a wider maximum aperture. Other lenses are also sharper. And of course sometimes you want to go outside of the 18-55mm range. An inexpensive addition to your lens is the Canon 50mm f1.8lens. It is sharper and has a much better maximum aperture. |

My lens collection has not recovered since I sold my Nikon outfit. I used to have a very nice Nikkor lens collection including a 50mm f1.4 for low light situations, other fixed focal length lenses like the 28mm f2.0 55mm Micro Nikkor, 80-200mm f4.5 and the 300mm f4. Currently I have only the Canon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 "kit lens" and my telescope which is a 819mm @ f6.3 I plan on getting additional lenses but college tuition and expenses are taking priority right now. |

To further my photo capabilities I have decided to treat myself to a 6 week PhotoShop (for photographers) class over at UCSD. Starts tonight! 50mm on a DSLR is slightly zoom - I have been contemplating either a 35mm or 50mm prime lens. Nikon has a 50mm f1.8 lens for just over $100 that gets very good reviews. I have also been looking at one of these for a little more creative focussing. |
