...to lay on an operating table having plastic surgery. Worked with a plastic surgeon today. Put the lady to sleep at about 8:30. We flipped her onto her tummy and spent an hour and a half doing liposuction of her love handles, butt, and back of her thighs. Then, we turned her on her back, and spent another 5 1/2 hours doing a breast reduction, tummy tuck, and more liposuction of the front of her thighs. Dropped her off in recovery at 3:30. I'm tired. But, the good news is that I'm on call tomorrow! |

Sounds like a tough day for the anesthesiologist, surgeon and patient, though I suspect the patient will take the longest to recover.... I'm clueless as to how an OR works during lengthy surgeries. Is there anyone there to give you and/or the surgeon a break, or do you just plow on valiantly no matter how long it takes? |

I'm still recovering. Can't speak for the surgeon. Patient? Well... Lengthy surgeries are a problem. The nursing staff usually have someone who can break the scrub and circulator for lunch, etc. Today, the OR manager broke the team while they ate. I was not alone today (my partner was on call, doing a bunch of small(er) cases. When I found out how long I'd be in this case, I asked him if he could drop in to relieve me for a potty break between (his) cases. He spelled me for about 10 min at 11:00. The surgeon took a bathroom break while we flipped the patient onto her back and started prepping for the supine part of the operation. He was out for about 15 minutes. However, in the middle of the night, you're on your own. Fortunately, cases rarely take that long in the wee small hours. In 30-plus years, I've had to leave the OR only once. |

The surgeon told me that she lives in a suburb of Atlanta where the *per capita* income is in excess of $200K per year. She'll pay cash. A lot of cash. A *whole lot* of cash. Lotsa Benjamins. |

When I had my wreck in 2003, my first procedure(repair of right humeras broken in two places and pelvis broken in five places) took six hours. The second procedure(R&R popped ACL with a cadaver tendon, repair PCL, and cluck over popped MCL in left knee), a week later, took six and a half. Same surgeon for both. |

How old was she George? And her marital status? Do you know her motivation for having all that done at once? I ask because I know ladies at times may reveal more to their anesthetists than to their surgeons. |

She was 46. Single She lives in Georgia, and was referred by a friend. She's quite well to do. Well, she did tell me that she had had liposuction before, which the surgeon didn't know about. He was pissed when he saw the scars: "She didn't tell me!" |
