I realize there are only about 3 other people sho care about soccer, but the draw for next June's World Cup just happened. So-called "Group of Death" is G (Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal, N. Korea). US and England are in the same group. Germany (for Klaus' benefit) is with Ghana, Australia, and Serbia - another tough group. I would say England wins their group with US second, which means US should play Germany in the second round, while England would get Ghana, or Serbia. Here are the results: Group A) 1)South Africa 2) Mexico (WTF!) 3) Uruguay 4) France group B) 1)Argentina 2) Nigeria 3)South Korea 4) Greece Group C) 1) England 2) USA 3) Algeria 4) Slovenia! Group D) 1) Germany 2) Australia 3) Serbia 4) Ghana Group E) 1) Netherlands 2) Denmark 3) Japan 4) Cameroon Group F) 1) Italy 2) Paraguay 3) New Zealand 4) Slovakia Group G) 1) Brazil 2) North Korea 3) Ivory Coast 4) Portugal Group H) 1) Spain 2) Switzerland 3) Honduras 4) Chile |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

Looks like Italy has it the easiest thusfar, no? I'm getting more and more into international football each year. For example, my friends and I watch EPL games all the time (go Arsenal!). |

I care deeply about soccer. I just never watch it. |

Italy is not as strong this time - they are getting old. One exception is Giuseppe Rossi (who is actually from New Jersey, but wanted to play for Italy - who wouldn't), and he will score some goals. Paraguay is a pretty good team, and Slovakia is ok. I would say you're right, though. that looks to be the easiest group. Edited by Phlebas, Dec 4 2009, 10:46 AM.

Random note...I may be going to Italy with my friend in June to watch some World Cup matches with the locals. Figured it would be a cool supplement to a European vacation. |

In terms of star power - Drogba, C. Ronaldo, and too many Brazilians to mention. I almost feel bad for N. Korea. |

Does Slovenia! always have an exclamation mark after it as a way of trying to make it sound less East-European and more the kind of place you could spend a saucy weekend? If so, it isn't working. |

Sorry, I added that as the draw was progressing (exclamation was for getting the easiest unseeded team from Europe), and forgot to edit it out. There's no such place as "Mexico (WTF!)," either. |

A fool and his money are soon parted, which is why you need to find an even bigger fool than me. Even for someone who has abandoned his country such as myself, a loss to the US would be extremely annoying. US football fans are how NY Yankee fans would be if the Yankees were really crap. Edit - this is the other D'Oh, not the delightful but scary one. |
