HOLY CARP!!!
Many people mentioned that I need to forgive Michael King.

I want you to know that I've taken this advice to heart and have been contemplating the matter in the past couple of days.

It may surprise you to know that I already have. I forgave King a long time ago. He's a sick man. Bottom line. He's sick.

I can even forgive the sheriff. He's drunk on power. His ego, his power and money are drugs and they are heady and addictive.

Who do I need to forgive? That would be God.

God. If there is a God, I can forgive Him for taking Denise. But I find it very difficult to forgive what she suffered. Why did she have to suffer the way she did. She was not a wanton female displaying her wares and begging for sexual attention. She was a meek young woman at home with her two babies who suffered horrifically begging for her life 17 times in a space of six minutes that we could hear on her 9-1-1 call. How many more times did she beg that we did not hear? She said "please" several times. She was brutally raped and terrorized. Why? Why did she need to suffer so horrifically?

That's my problem. Is there a God? Is this God all powerful?

I am doing my best to realize that it was King and not God who committed the crime. My mind says this is so. But, my heart continues to condemn not King, but God.

It would be a helluva easier to say "there is no God" "God (at least a good God) would not allow this to happen.

I look for inspiration from the Jews. The Jews that have found solace in God after the many atrocities committed in NAZI Germany.

But it's damn difficult.

Just my thoughts. Thank you for your indulgence.

God doesn't give people more than they can handle, Peggy.

He's given you so much to deal with because He knows you can handle it.

That's the only way it makes sense to me.

As an atheist, what can I say?
I feel pressure to direct you back to your religion because at times like this the religious people need their religion the most. No?
I will not witness for atheism.

Good questions Peggy. I've often asked similar ones.
You're a very strong lady too.
I just wanted to say this.

Forgiving King does you great credit, Peggy.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

I think you're closer to God than you know, Peggy. Your forgiveness of others allows you to rage at God in ways that will work good for your soul. In the end, I think you will know better why God allows us humans to be free to do both evil and good to each other. His purposes are eternal, our mortal lives are passing, and what happens now is only a beginning to a never-ending life.

Oh Peggy. I can feel your anguish and I share your doubts.

One question comes to mind that is worth some though:

If Denise had not suffered, would the 911 reform effort have begun?

Denise’s death is a heavy, heavy toll to pay to improve something as mundane as an emergency response system. But her sacrifice has already led to improvement in Florida. And it has served as a touchstone for many, many others involved directly or indirectly in emergency response.

She has touched so many lives that she would not, could not have touched had her death been other than it was. And she will touch so many more.

A damnably high price to pay, maybe too high of a price. But never, not even for one second, should you feel her loss was meaningless. You and Mark and Nathan and everyone you are touching are giving her life meaning.

To answer the fundamental question, Peggy, in my opinion God knows all that will happen but doesn't mean He controls it.

We live in a fallen world. A worldy world. It's not a perfect Garden of Eden and hasn't been for a very long time. Good things happen, bad things happen. We must appreciate the good just as we must forgive the bad (or at least weather the storm). This is the world we live in, and why Heaven will look all the brighter if we are fortunate enough to see those pearly gates.

Hey Peggy -- you are so thoughtful and insightful. I have to think that, as rough as is, the road you are on is the right one. Keep going.
