HOLY CARP!!!
|
Several weeks ago (at least three, but it might be five), I was putting on my socks and felt my toenail catch. Not a ripping, painful catch - just like I had a bit of a jagged edge. I looked, and part of my toenail along one side had...lifted, I guess...from the nail bed. I just left it alone because it wasn't very much and I knew cutting it off that would would risk an in grown nail and/or causing the part that was still attached to rip off painfully. Fast forward to today. Only about 1/4 (width wise) of my nail was still attached. Maybe less. It was starting to catch on things and I was worried that I would rip it off, so I trimmed it all back. I now have a teensy tiny piece of real nail near the tip of my toe still attached, but nothing else. Underneath this nail is an ultra-thin coating of nail. But it's super-thin. And there doesn't seem to be any real nail growing in behind it. I didn't, as far as I can remember, drop anything on my foot or injure it in any way. There doesn't seem to be any issue with infection, skin weirdness, etc. The only "problems" I ever have with my feet is a tendency toward slightly dry heels and if I clip my right big toenail too short I get an ingrown nail. What gives!? Will my nail grow back? |

that thin nail is probably going to toughen up and do just fine. You may have injured that toe months ago. That happened to me when I came down on my toe weird in a raquetball game. Nothing happened at the time, but eventually, my toe nail just caught, like yours did, and came off. Under it was a nice newly grown nail. I think it was kind of thin initially, but eventually was normal and fine. |

Phew! Thanks, Deb! I'm a klutz, so it's quite possible I don't remember doing something to it. My dad has permanently lost most of his finger and toe nails due to his dermatitis, and while I have no other symptoms of anything wrong, it did bring a moment of panic. |

when mine came off, I was stretching my foot out underneath the sheet in the bed at my husband's mother's house, shortly after we were married. When I felt the nail come off, I let out a shriek...of surprise, not pain...but needless to say, it created interesting conversation at the breakfast table

I think this can happen to people when they exercise or run. The foot slides forward in the shoe and the repeated trauma can cause nail damage to the point of it falling off. Used to happen to me occasionally when I was a runner. Scared the heck out of me the first time it happened...do you run or do aerobics? |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

This is happening to Janet as we speak. About a month ago she dropped a heavy suitcase on her foot, splitting her big toenail right down the middle from cuticle to end of toe. We're pretty sure she will lose it, but it is taking a very long time. |

I've lost a couple these past years. Due to running. They grow back. But they're slow to grow back. I notice the new nails seem thicker, tougher than the previous ones. |
