If I had the dough I would buy a Steinway B in a heartbeat.

I'm not an expert about pianos...it's the indian not the arrow in many cases.

Since this thread is still going on and PattyP is curious, I have a late 70's early 80's Kawai console. Nothing special but the price ($1600) was right.

It replaced our Kincaid ("arguably the worst piano ever made" - L. Fine).

Well, just try to view it from the perspective of an owner who loves and plays the piano. How would you feel if you read many nasty things being said about an instrument that brings you so much personal satisfaction and enjoyment? It's hurtful and an indirect insult to personal taste.
Plays, don't take it so seriously. It's not meant to reflect on your personal taste, a Steinway can be a very nice piano. If you like yours, that's fine. I would probably like it too. The issues I raise when discussing Steinway pianos are not meant to say that those who own them or who like them are somehow "stupid" for liking them, it's simply pure technical commentary. I don't like Yamahas either, for the exact opposite reasons. They have all the perfection and consistency of a Keebler cookie.

I think Steinway should spend more time finishing their pianos before they sell them to the dealer network. I think those who purchase them deserve that. I think Steinway should address the poor fit and finish of their product. Those who purchase their pianos deserve that. But if you like your piano, and there are no fit and finish issues that concern you, nothing I'm saying has anything to do with either your piano, or your personal tastes or choices. It's all just technical issues concerning the brand in general.

So basically what you're saying is that we should never express negative opinions about products because we might be offending those who bought those products.

If we're discussing pianos and the pros and cons of each brand, and someone takes a comment about Steinway as a slight against their own personal piano, I'd call that person way overly sensitive.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I own a Yamaha U3M. It sounds good, lovely to play, holds it's tune really well, fits in my house, and we could afford it.

Also have an older Technics PX201. Figured we'd get next to nothing by trying to sell it, so we've just hung on to it for headphone playing purposes. Sounds ok; figure the kid will take it when he moves out on his own.

maybe we could trade your Bluthner for my Petrof and then we can bump up the numbers for both of them.

When Plays talks about "nasty" things said, I doubt she's referring to anything said here. Most likely refers to some of the irrational bashing on PW.

If y'all know of a piano that can help me with a Rachmaninoff prelude let me know. I'll spend big $$ for the help right now.

MS - how is you cello coming? I picked up a new 3/4 size (rental) for my 11-year old. It is so beautiful. I wish I could play a note on it.

It's coming along for having a 5 year break. I'm very happy with my teacher. At one of my recent lessons, I had a terrific moment of clarity and insight. My tone has been better since.

I have some Christmas music I'm planning to work on so IT and I can play some music together.

Scarry as this sounds, I used to practice law with a guy who kinda looked like Rachmaninoff.

That eBay picture reminded me of that. :silly:

MS, the Christmas music will be wonderful. Good luck with that.

Oh, Deb, what a gorgeous sight! How big is your Yamaha? Just from the picture I'd guess 7'.

I'm going to try to get to the Yamaha dealer tomorrow evening; either that or go to dog training class. I figure I can skip out of the first class since I've done a fair amount of training in my time.

Can't quite tell the length from the picture from the angle. Is it a C3 or a C7?

It's a C3, PD...the picture angle is deceptive. Patty, it's just 6'1"
