What Piano(s) Do You Own and Why?; Inquiring Minds

OK.

So, everybody most likely knows I'm piano shopping in earnest. I’m curious what brand folks own, why that particular one, and the size. I know this is probably old news to most but I don’t always pay attention. If you don’t mind sharing, I’d like to know what piano you chose to own and why.

If you're lucky enough to have multiple instruments pick the one you use most often.

edit: Oh, nuts. I forgot "Other" on the poll.

Patty, the problem here is that why any of us bought one brand or another is pretty much irrelevant to your search. All the major brands are good instruments. They have track records and you can buy with confidence. I don't think there is any significant variation in the amount of maintenance. That would be a result of how you play, the environment and how you take care of it.

What you are tasked with is finding the one that touches your heart and soul when you play it. And that is a journey you have to take on your own.

I have a Bohemia 185BR (Renner action) that I took possession of in 2008. I guess that qualifies as "other."

Oh, and I'd have a Bechstein if I had my druthers, but because it touches my heart an soul. No other reason.

Meanwhile, back at financial reality, my Pramberger 185 is doing just fine. Holds tune like nobody's business.

Petrof upright - liked the sound of it ( I don't play, my daughter's were playing). Oldest daughter liked it as well, so that was a majority.

Petrof III Majestic 2005. 6'4"

It's pretty and I couldn't pass up the price I haggled it to.

I also have a Roland RD700SX digital that I split time with.

Pretty happy with both but sure wish I had one of those Chinese TV pianos now. Damm!

Mik, you're a peach. I had a feeling you would say something like that and I do appreciate it.

I don't mean this to influence my search; I'm just curious.

HOLY CARP!!!
Yamaha C3...and because I played everything else and loved it most. Still do and don't give a rat's derriere about the stupid anti-Yamaha weirdos in these forums. My piano sings.

I love Yamaha grands, after I played them for a while. I love the consistency and do not find them too bright at all.

HOLY CARP!!!
I have a Blüthner concert grand I bought new a couple years ago.
I bought it because I'm crazy and also because I got it for half of list price when a dealer lost the franchise.

It sounds like you are about to spend a ton of money because of the names you have mentioned.
Play all the top pianos first.
Fly to see them if you have to.
You don't want to buy one, get used to it, only to learn you prefer another.
I did that and it may cost you.

Here is Fine's ever-controversial list to which I'd add Estonia and Mason & Hamlin if you want to draw a line somewhere limit your search:

Group 1A
Blüthner
Bösendorfer
Fazioli
Steingraeber & Söhne
Hamburg Steinway

Group 1B
C. Bechstein (Concert Series - make sure the C is in front of Bechstein)
August Förster
Grotrian
Sauter

Group 1C
Shigeru Kawai
NY Steinway

It's funny that you say that, Mik. I had a rather negative opinion of Kawais. Every single one I played sounded muted and muffled (like the "Anti-Yamaha, if you will).

And then I went to Farley's and looked at his Kawais. Oh. My. Goodness. They were remarkable. Farley takes great care in prepping his pianos, and all of his Kawais were remarkable. I almost, almost, went with a RX 5 instead of my Bohemia.

me either...I don't like a muffled treble. Steinway is too bright for my taste in studio or home, but perfect for concert hall. I need bell like clarity in the treble in combination with a rich bass, and my piano delivers on both ends. When I recently recorded in studio with my student, the piano was a C3 and I was really relieved. The familiarity of tone and touch helped me tremendously in dealing with the freaking scary prospect of playing with mics on.

I play on Kawais at the high school. They kill me. Too stiff for my poor old hands.

At school we put Abel hammers on three Yamaha C3s and they sounded fantastic.

One of the nicest little pianos I have ever had was a Yamaha console. It held a tune like nobody's business and had a very sweet voice.

You want to be shocked? Go to a Steinway dealer and play them out of the box. Awful, they are. DOA.

I've heard that Steinways take A LOT of prepping from the factory.

Larry Fine says they are "diamonds in the rough." For that kind of cash, I'd prefer a "diamond in reality."

As for Steinways needing a lot of prep..... that part is true - the damn things nearly need to be rebuilt before they'll play..

There was probably a lot of dissonance going on between the two.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
