So, M&M's calls me this morning. One of her coworkers is really into airedales. She has two. She's also a part of an airedale rescue society. Apparantly, there is a Redline Airedale that is six months old, and is about to be put down, as the society doesn't have the funds to keep these dogs beyond three days. So, M&M's is being told that if somebody doesn't take the dog in the 24 hours, he'll be put down, along with a 2 year old Scottish Wolfhound/Great Dane mix. So, in essence, M&M's is getting the hard close. If we don't take the dog, it's dead... (Personally, I find it hard to believe that they can't find a no-kill shelter somewhere that can take it.) Anyway, I told her to tell them to keep searching, and if they can't find any other options, we'll take one or the other on a long term basis, or both on a short term basis.

Three days? That is awfully short. Rescue societies usually have a place to keep them. Why are these dogs abandoned? Also, these are both basically outdoor working dogs. Do you have room for them and time to exercise them properly? |

I LOVE Scottish Deerhounds!!! I want one SO bad!! Anyway, I know if I were in your shoes I'd take them both! Maybe just one for short term, but I'm sure I'd keep one for myself. |
| And how are you today? | |

One? Yes. Two? No. Which is why it would only be on a short term. Personally, I would prefer to find another option for both of them. If we had to take one, the Airedale would probably make the most sense; but there is something appealing to me about having a big ugly shaggy scottish beast... I've always liked having dogs that when you wrestle with them, the dogs can win... If I was to be choosing a dog myself, I'd probably lean towards a Golden Retriever (mix), Border Collie (mix), or Lab. I've always really liked all of these dogs. |

That's right, I didn't see the value of doing what is reasonably in one's power, which would be adopt one as a pet, so I decided that the only way to do any good in the world is to adopt a whole metric ****load of stray and neglected aminals. It smells around here and you wouldn't believe how much newspaper I go through. |

Why not take 2 dogs? Why not 3, or 4? 5 or 6? It is an easy slope to slide down. I think it stops when you become one of those crazy cat people with 75 in a one-bedroom apartment. If you want the dog get it. But not because of the guilt thing. Get it because you really want it. |

WAIT!!! Do you mean an IRISH WOLFhound or a SCOTTISH DEERhound!!???? Which is it, man!! Wolfhound: ![]() Deerhound: ![]() I'm hyperventilating again! I adore Irish Wolfhounds and would give my left arm to have one someday. Wolfhounds are heavier and taller than Deerhounds; taller than Danes. They are the tallest breed on earth. Here's what you do, kenny. Ready? You say to yourself, hmmm, how much do I know about animals? How much do I really want to get into this? Do I have the time, money, motivation and space required to take good care of these animals? How many could I take on before they become too much of a burden for me? I suppose what I'm getting at here is that if you use "common sense" as a framework for your decision making, you can come up with an answer that is in fact in between zero animals and every needy warm- and cold-blooded creature in existence. That's how I'd get past that darn ol' slippery slope. I'd think about it some. You may discover other workarounds. |

Are these dogs listed on petfinder.com or anywhere on the web? And where are they located? (Good lord, I need another dog like I need a hole in the head!) I've had/have two BC mixes in my life and they are by far the best dogs. My first BC mix was so intuitive it was uncanny. He knew how I felt before I did. My BC now is smart, funny, gets along with all other dogs and people. I'd never hesitate to have another BC mix. |

That is EXACTLY what I've said about dogs, for years. If, when you wrestle with it, there's no chance the animal can win, it's not big enough to be called a dog. Unless, of course, it's a 10-pound monkey. |

A friend of mine had a huge Rot named Thor. Man, I loved wrestling with that dog. One time, I brought a date over to their house. The dog saw me on the porch, got excited, ran through the screen door and jumped on me. The two of us were wrestling around on the porch, and my date was shrieking like you wouldn't believe. |

I Owe It All To John D'Oh

I have a similar Rot story. There were three HUGE Rots that lived around the corner from us in San Francisco. My Vizsla loved them, he'd race across the street to go see them. They were very dominant, but sweet dogs. One day, I was talking to the owner, and I bent down to scratch one of the Rot's ears. After about thirty seconds, I started to get up. Not so fast, bub, said the dog. He didn't think I was done scratching yet. He reached out and grabbed my shoulder ... with his mouth. Tore a huge gash in my fleece sweater, and left my shoulder black and blue for two weeks. The owner was horrified. I didn't care, though, because I knew the dog wasn't trying to hurt me. He just wanted me to keep scratching. My more recent story ... whenever I put on winter gloves, my ex's German Shepherd would go nuts. He knew that the gloves meant it was play time, and he was allowed to bite my hands. |
