The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

First, is religion interchangeable with Christianity in this context—that is, would you say that "without Christianity, our history would still be written on cave walls"? If so, we're going to have to up the number. |

We moved to paper before Christianity. But without Catholics there is a reasonable chance we would be back to the caves. And we might still go back there. Either way the millstone is simple name calling. |

Without the Church, it is doubtful that much of the knowledge in the West would have survived, once the Roman Empire fell. During the Middle Ages, some of the very best of European architecture is exemplified in the cathedrals. Most of the universities founded in those times trace their lineage directly back to the Christian Church. The very best art of the time is sponsered or influenced by the Church. And just a bit later, without the Church, a lot of the music of Beethoven, Bach or Mozart would not exist. The Church is also responsible for much of the healthcare of the West after Rome fell, and helped found many of the hospitals throughout the West, many of which exist today. Lastly, I think most of our law is nothing more than codified morality and that morality is based on the teachings of the Church. Without the Church, there is no Enlightenment and perhaps no United States. |

I've always been a proponent of population control, so at least religion does have that going for it: •The Crusades: 6,000,000 •Thirty Years War: 11,500,000 •French Wars of Religion: 4,000,000 •Second Sudanese Civil War: 2,000,000 •Lebanese Civil War: 250,000 •Muslim Conquests of India: 80,000,000 •Congolese Genocide (King Leopold II): 13,000,000 •Armenian Genocide: 1,500,000 •Rwandan Genocide: 800,000 •Eighty Years' War: 1,000,000 •Nigerian Civil War: 1,000,000 •Great Peasants' Revolt: 250,000 •First Sudanese Civil War: 1,000,000 •Jewish Diaspora (Not Including the Holocaust): 1,000,000 •The Holocaust (Jewish and Homosexual Deaths): 6,500,000 •Islamic Terrorism Since 2000: 150,000 •Iraq War: 500,000 •US Western Expansion (Justified by "Manifest Destiny"):20,000,000 •Atlantic Slave Trade (Justified by Christianity): 14,000,000 •Aztec Human Sacrifice: 80,000 •AIDS deaths in Africa largely due to opposition to condoms: 30,000,000 •Spanish Inquisition: 5,000 •TOTAL: 195,035,000 deaths in the name of religion. |

That's the Church as institution, not theology itself. Theological concepts don't visit the bank, eat breakfast or preserve historical information.
So? Some of the very best of [pick your favorite region and time period] architecture is exemplified in [pick your favorite architectural projects]. Christianity doesn't have a monopoly on cool architecture.
And in those universities, they studied the work of Pagans, just like philo students do today.
Now you're just being ridiculous. If you think believing in God makes you a better artist there's really no place to go from there.
I don't even know what "much of the healthcare" is supposed to mean.
Yeah, you've brought that up before, that you can't have morality without Christianity. The problem is that the two are not synonyms. And simply saying, "well, what else can you base it on" and then denying everything else because it isn't Christianity is a very basic fallacy. |

I'll address just a couple of the flaws in your list: 1. Slavery was NOT justified by Christianity. 2. Break out the wars that were caused by muslims, because those wars weren't fought in the name of religion, they were fought in the name of political ideology. You see, islam is politics masquerading as a religion. |

Here's an article from the Huffington Post that rips your "Religion is the cause of most wars" lunacy a new asshole. I picked this article because it's from a leftwing nutjob rag, and I knew that you would listen if the information came from another nutjob... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rabbi-alan-lurie/is-religion-the-cause-of-_b_1400766.html |

Religion's done some good stuff, and it's done some bad stuff. Like just about everything else man-made. People frequently use religion as an excuse for some dreadful behavior, but it's also inspired some people to perform miracles. |
