Good, it looks increasingly clear that the Obama administration is making intelligent moves and is doing right by the people on this one.

Obama rejects Russia missile link

The US president says his decision to shelve a missile defence plan was not dictated by Russian opposition.

"The Russians don't make determinations about what our defence posture is," Barack Obama told CBS television.

"If the by-product of it is that the Russians feel a little less paranoid... then that's a bonus," Mr Obama said.

US conservatives have criticised the decision to scrap the plan to deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic.

Mr Obama's predecessor, George W Bush, had argued that the system was necessary to deal with potential threats from Iran.

Moscow said it was aimed against Russia, and has welcomed the US decision to abandon it.

Mr Obama's plan is to replace it with a defence system using sea and land-based interceptors.

Asked on the CBS's Face the Nation programme, Mr Obama said: "My task here was not to negotiate with the Russians."

"Russia had always been paranoid about this, but George Bush was right. This wasn't a threat to them," Mr Obama said.

He added that the replacement plan would not be a threat to Russia, either.

The US leader said it would be a bonus if the Russians were "now willing to work more effectively with us to deal with threats like ballistic missiles from Iran or nuclear development in Iran".

'Better' protection

Writing in the New York Times earlier, Mr Obama's Defence Secretary Robert Gates said Russia's attitude had "played no part" in his recommendation to President Obama to drop the plan.

Under the original plan, the US signed a deal in August 2008 with Poland to site 10 interceptors at a base near the Baltic Sea, and with the Czech Republic to build a radar station on its territory.

“ I have found since taking this post that when it comes to missile defence, some hold a view bordering on theology ”
Robert Gates
Mr Gates, a Republican who also served as defence secretary during George W Bush's final years as president, described initially recommending the missile defence plan in late 2006.

"At the time, it was the best plan based on the technology and threat assessment available," he said. But he said the system, designed to deal with long-range missiles, would not have been installed before 2017, and that a new system announced by President Obama this week would provide better protection.

He said this system, which would use sea and land-based interceptors, "actually provides us with greater flexibility to adapt as new threats develop and old ones recede".

Mr Gates said the decision to drop the initial plan was a "pragmatic" one, scolding those who he said provided a "devoted following" to missile defence plans that were "unworkable, prohibitively expensive and could never be practically deployed".

"I have found since taking this post that when it comes to missile defence, some hold a view bordering on theology that regards any change of plans or any cancellation of a program as abandonment or even breaking faith," he said.

Of course he says this. But his digs at Russian 'paranoia' are, again, strictly amateur hour. Unproductive, arrogant and inflammatory.

President Obama cancelled anti-missile shield plans in Poland and the Czech Republic to get Russia support for UN sanctions against Iran, documents made public by Wikileaks reveal.

The released documents also show that out of the 251,287 cables planned for release by Wikileaks, 972 come from US embassies in Warsaw (970) and Krakow (2). The most recent cables from Poland are dated February 2010 though their contents have not yet been revealed.

One of the cables from Poland is labelled ‘top secret’, 30 ‘secret’, nine ‘confidential’ 556 ‘sensitive’, 204 ‘for official use only’ and 170 not classified as confidential.

Earlier, US diplomats had informed Poland’s Foreign Ministry that documents were to be released by Wikileaks which could potentially compromise confidentiality between the two sides.

The whistle blowing web site, publishing diplomatic cables and other documents via The New York Times, the Guardian (UK) and other media outlets, show that George Bush’s anti-missile shield plan to station 10 interceptor rockets in Poland not far from the Kaliningrad (Russia) border and a radar system in the Czech Republic was seen as an obstacle by Washington in getting tougher sanctions against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The diplomatic cables show that the US believes that Iran has already received missiles from North Korea which could threaten western Europe.

The released documents show that Russia had intensified its campaign against the anti-missile shield in 2009, with Moscow believing the system would be directed at Poland’s immediate east and not Iran.

In September, President Obama cancelled the anti-missile system.

In September, the system was cancelled. A month later, we have this:

Russia resisting sanctions against Iran

Russia pushed back Tuesday at U.S. efforts to threaten tough new sanctions if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful, a setback to the Obama administration's desire to present a united front with Moscow.

After meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow believed that such threats would not persuade Iran to comply and that negotiations should continue to be pursued.

"At the current stage, all forces should be thrown at supporting the negotiating process," he told reporters at a joint news conference with Clinton. "Threats, sanctions and threats of pressure in the current situation, we are convinced, would be counterproductive."

Clinton, on her first visit to Moscow as secretary of state, had been looking to gauge Russia's willingness to join the U.S. in applying additional pressure on Iran to come clean about its nuclear intentions.

It amazes me that the very same people whinging about how we cannot afford health care reform are willing to spend untold amounts of money on a missile shield system that doesn't work, and, even if it did, probably wouldn't shield us very well anyway.

The military-industrial complex has you wrapped around their finger, boys.
Oh, yeah, there's this, too:

NATO planned Saturday to deliver a historic invitation for Russia to join a missile shield protecting Europe against Iranian attack, a milestone for an alliance that was built to defend against Soviet forces.

President Barack Obama won NATO support on Friday to build the missile shield over Europe, an ambitious commitment to protect against Iran's increasingly sophisticated ballistic missiles and a nuclear program the West says is aimed at producing a bomb.

I didn't know that NATO had a military-industrial complex, especially one that would invite the Russians to join.

George, this habit you have of digging up old threads when there's an update... it can be pretty interesting.

But I noticed you somehow forgot to do it on DeLay's conviction - there were plenty of threads where conservative posters here told us how the charges were trumped-up for political purposes and he was bound to walk. Funny you couldn't find any of them. :lol2:

1) Search for "Hammer Time." A thread that, ahem, *I* started dealing with DeLay's conviction.

2) Show me where I defended DeLay. All I did was comment on Gerrymandering. I said nothing about the "money laundering" accusations, except to (erroneously) say that charges were dropped.

1a) Never mind, I did it for you: http://s10.zetaboards.com/The_New_Coffee_Room/topic/7306963/1/?x=60#new

Funny how you tend to generalize what people on the right say. :whome:

Oh, and in reference to your first comment, I remember the discussion about the trashed missile shield. Though I'm not creative, I have a fairly good memory. That's why the thread was resurrected, rather than starting a new one.

Wanna comment on the content of my new post, or do you just want to criticize how I post?

1) yes, that's what I'm talking about. you started a new thread for it instead of finding one of the many threads where we were told he would walk.

2) Oh, I should have said 'conservative posters' instead of 'you'. Oh wait.... I did.

Nice back-pedaling.

My apologies for not searching for my comments about DeLay - they were so few and far between, I didn't think it worth mentioning. As a matter of fact, a quick search of "DeLay Innocent" reveals only my comment about charges being dropped. A search of "DeLay not guilty" reveals one comment by Jolly, and me quoting a blog.

Well, of course there's Larry:
Quote:

Maybe Delay is guilty of something, maybe he isn't.

Delay will walk.

So, er, that's two people saying he'll walk - in two threads.

As I said, nice back-pedaling.

So, strictly speaking you're right when you said conservative posters. Two of them certainly qualifies for the plural. Cabaleriffic.

But...

[jon nyc mode] this thread is about Obama ceding the missile shield to the Russians, not Tom Delay or my searching habits. If you want to discuss those subjects, why not start another thread? [/jon nyc mode].
