Obama scraps missile defense shield in Europe; I predicted this

I'd at least like to know that we got something for this, and what it is. I find the 'new missile defense architecture' pretty vague.

US Scraps Bush Plan for Missile Shield
By ANNE GEARAN and DESMOND BUTLER, AP

WASHINGTON (Sept. 17) — President Barack Obama on Thursday shelved a Bush-era plan for an Eastern European missile defense plan that has been a major irritant in relations with Russia. He said a redesigned defensive system would be cheaper, quicker and more effective against the threat from Iranian missiles.

"Our new missile defense architecture in Europe will provide stronger, smarter and swifter defenses of American forces and America's allies," Obama said in an announcement from the White House. "It is more comprehensive than the previous program; it deploys capabilities that are proven and cost effective, and it sustains and builds upon our commitment to protect the U.S. homeland."

The missile defense system, planned under the Bush administration, was to have been built in the Czech Republic and Poland. Obama phoned Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer Wednesday night and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk Thursday morning to alert them of his decision.

Obama said the plan was scrapped in part because, after a review, the U.S. has concluded that Iran is less focused on developing the kind of long-range missiles for which the system was originally developed, making the building of an expensive new shield unnecessary. New technology also has arisen that military advisers decided could be deployed sooner and more effectively, he said.

Anticipating certain criticism from the right that he was weakening America's security, Obama said repeatedly that this decision would provide more — not less — protection.

"I'm committed to deploying strong missile defense systems that are adaptable to the threats of the 21st century," the president said.

He said the U.S. will continue to work cooperatively with what he called "our close friends and allies" — the Czech Republic and Poland, which had agreed to host the Bush-planned shield at considerable cost in public opinion and their relations with Russia.

He also made a pointed reference to Russia and its long and heated objections to the shield. "Its concerns about our previous missile defense programs were entirely unfounded," Obama said.

Still, the decision could — and mostly likely will — be read as at least in part as an effort to placate Russia at a time when its support against Iran's suspected nuclear program has not been forthcoming and is sorely needed.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

It amazes me that the very same people whinging about how we cannot afford health care reform are willing to spend untold amounts of money on a missile shield system that doesn't work, and, even if it did, probably wouldn't shield us very well anyway.

It is rather strange that this announcement comes on the 70th anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland.

Correction JB: It is 70th anniversary of the *Soviet invasion of Poland* and the announcement is purely coincidental to the events of 1939.

$9-14 billion for 20 years of missile defense in Eastern Europe.

Now how much was that healthcare bill again? About $900 billion for 10 years was it? Your comparison is ridiculous.

I was sure it was unintentional but I still found it an odd coincidence.

No confidence that the "missile defense system" will work (much less work well), do not see credible threat that would depend on such a system to neutralize, see it as a waste of resources to begin with, glad to see it scrapped.

As I've said before, it doesn't have to work perfectly. It only has to work well enough, or be perceived to work well enough, to deter an attack.

Nope, don't see any deterrent value either.
Even when working perfectly, it will be "defensive," not "offensive."
Best case, it shoots down missiles.
It cannot deal damage or otherwise punish the entity that launches the offending missiles.
So no deterrent value.

We have systems to do that. Vaporizing someone after they have obliterated a couple or three million people won't bring those folks back. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Take your pick. I never believed the system was truly intended to deter Iran anyway.

Prevention ≠ Deterrence

(I will grant you that Deterrence ∈ Prevention. But I have no confidence that it will work as Prevention either. I do not believe there is any country that can launch missiles into NATO thinks that it would work as well.)

Missle Defense is basic castle doctrine.

You either totally defend against an attack, or you make sure your screen is good enough to sap some of your opponent's strength while maintaining your own.

The resources allocated to this project do not exceed the cost of 5 B-2 bombers.

It's a strategic blunder on Obama's part.
