Mmmmmmm, pie!
When I went to my mailbox this morning there was a slip inside telling me that I had a certified letter from the IRS that I needed to pick up at the post office. As I'm sure you can relate, it just screwed up my whole morning, wondering what kind of sh!t I was in for now.....

we *are* prisoners of the federal government, you know.......

So I wasted nearly half an hour of my life, altered my plans for the morning, just to go pick up this latest threat to my financial existence. I signed for it, and they handed me a big, fat envelope so filled with pages of paper that it was all the sender could do to get the thing closed.....

Inside, filled with page after page of instructions of what my options were should I desire to contest their decision, several pre-printed handouts, there was a 3 page letter from them telling me they were denying a certain portion of my claim for "credit" on my last year taxes.

They would not be sending me.........

$1.00

They spent 14 dollars (I think) sending me a certified letter, at least a dollar's worth of paper and time, took half an hour of my life (which is worth a hell of a lot more than a dollar) to tell me that I wouldn't be getting a dollar that I had apparently asked them for.

The IRS should be abolished.

Give 'em a break.

They're busy getting ready to fix your health.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

HOLY CARP!!!
But you can seek revenge.

Here is what I do:

Whenever I have to pay something to the government, I don't pay the actual amount to pay. I pay a bit more - a few cents or maybe about one Euro. They are not allowed to just keep the money, hence my additional few cents will keep them busy for a while. Of course, if they ask me for a bank account to send the money back, I'll give them a non-existing account number, which means that they'll pay at least 10 Euros for attemping to transfer money to a non-existing account. You get the idea...

It's the same everywhere.

Here's my little story: We have conscription, but since I was ruled unfit to serve (due to a very slight hip ailment, but they're not taking any risks...) I get to pay 200 Swiss Francs (~186 US$, actually dependent on income, but 200 SFr. is the minimum) every year instead. First, they send me a bill for 200 SFr. This one I have to pay even though it carries a note that this is only a provisional bill and once they've processed my tax return, they'd calculate the actual amount I have to pay and send me another bill for the remaining sum I owe them. Now, my income isn't that high so I only have to pay the minimum of 200 SFr.

Every year I get another bill for the amount of 0 SFr., to be paid within 30 days.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
You have to (theoretically) pay some sort of tax since you were not approved to serve in the army?
The dogma lives loudly within me.

Not theoretically. That tax is very real, I do get to pay 200 SFr. every year. It doesn't matter that I would have served, had I been asked to, it doesn't matter that my hips aren't that bad, if I don't serve, I get go pay. That's how it is.

OTOH, if I had been approved to serve, I would have to do a three-week refresher course every year until I'm 34. Doesn't sound that bad, but the army habitually schedules those courses when the universities hold their exams. Those of my student friends who do serve constantly have to apply for permission to do the course at a later date so they won't miss their exams (it is usually granted, but it's still a hassle)... Similarly, boot camp always ends when terms have already started which means that military service delays starting your studies by a year. I'd rather pay 200 SFr. than deal with this kind of bureaucratic madness.
