HOLY CARP!!!
It's great! I've used it every day since I got it.

A steak is not a steak till it's grilled over mesquite lump charcoal... I will never go back. I've also tried beer can chicken, which was very very good, and some ribs, which were awful. Sometimes apparently it takes more effort to cook something than to drop it on the grate and forget about it for an hour or so. Who knew?

Here's me and my BGE!

I would have preferred stealth black but green is the only color it comes in :(

I was referring to the symmetry of greens. Your shirt and the "egg."

Neat.

A man and his grill .............. I think you could make a country song out of that, Horace. :)

Ribs are indeed more of a challenge. Low and slow seems best. Low heat and slow cooking. Bring yer egg to Minnesoooota, and hubby and I will provide the fixin's. We make great ribs. Actually, I am concerned to have hubby find out about the green egg. He'll be wanting one. Maybe I will, too.

I tried the low and slow thing... but they turned out very very rubbery. I'm not sure what went wrong but I assume it had something to do with the fact that I never basted them, or maybe that I had them too close to the coals. I think I wasn't supposed to use direct heat.

That's right. They do best with indirect heat. Sauce goes on only during the last 10 to 15 minutes, or else it tends to char a bit much.

OK, get yerself to Minnesoooota and we'll teach you the finer points of the art of the grill.

Horace, I can even make good ribs in an electric oven. It takes years to hone these skills. You need to learn from an old lady.

Thanks brenda! I need to learn to slow cook on this thing, because fast-searing direct heat type cooks are just as good on any cheap grill. I need to play to this thing's strengths.

Horace, what does the booklet that comes with the BGE recommend?

You can also do smoking with it, right? That would be an awesome way to do the ribs. Hubby plans to do a fresh ham in our smoker. Another time we'll smoke some ribs and chicken. Daughter is not fond of ribs.

Yes, this thing is a smoker, that's its primary purpose really. It's a great grill but not really different than any other cheaper grill. Its main strength is in air control and temperature control, due to the thick ceramic and tight seal between the lid and the base (there's a gasket bewteen them) and two adjustable doors, one at the bottom and one on top, to control how much oxygen gets to the coals.

I haven't read the booklet that came with it, but after I put it together there were no extra parts so I claim that that would have been a complete waste of time anyway.

:lol2:

Ah yes, that's hubby's perspective as well. He thinks the owner's booklet is only to be used as a last resort. :hat:

This one might come with recipes and cooking tips for the new user. If it does, let me know how they say to do certain dishes.

Psssst ........... don't tell my hubby, but I'm thinking this BGE might be a good thing. Thanks for sharing your experiences here about yours. Keep me informed on how it's working for you.

Thanks all, you're very kind. :)

Now I have not only a grill to hang out with, but as of today an iPhone too. I am dutifully trying to learn how to use it while avoiding reading anything that looks technical. It's not easy.

By the way, I lit my grill with a blow torch tonight. How cool is that??

Oh my, Horace, that is what hubby would call a 'manly' way to start the grill.

Just don't try to start any of the iPhone apps with the blow torch. That might not work very well.

Yeah, it seems most guys avoid the users manual. "How hard can it be?" That's what they say as they start. Sometimes it works.

Hey Horace.. smoke on, brother.

I just made a batch of bread dough and a big jug of iced tea (Luzianne, of course). It's a fine summer thunderstorm day here in Cincinnati. The dark skies make it seem like fall, a good time to work inside and cook up a fine dinner for friends. Wish you all were here.
