It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Why would John have to go in the morning? He's still there from the night before!

The worst thing about it is that it's the traditional pubs that are doing the worst. These so-called 'gastro-pubs' and pubs owned by large consortiums are mostly abominations serving keg beer rather than real ale in any case.

I'm over there in a couple of weeks - I shall have to make sure I visit as many pubs as possible, just in case, as a charitable exercise.

Indeed. Just nudge him a little. He'll probably wake up.

Shrewsbury is a good town, with a good choice of real ale pubs. Well, for now at least... :-/
And how are you today?

3 pound 50p for a pint in an atmospheric pub, or under 50p a can bought in a supermarket? It's a no-brainer.
Drive the car through the busy traffic to Costco where the queues are just the longest ever and fill the boot with supplies for the coming week; such is life for many in North East London on a Sunday.

Every morning the soul is once again as good as new, and again one offers it to one's brothers & sisters in life.

Here's a great read on pub life.

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

It's also only 2 pound 20 in Lancashire, and the beer's better.

Sadly, I can't say the same for where I actually live.

Agreed, Phlebas. Great book.

So is this, if you're in the mood for a mystery. At the back of the book the author lists all the pubs mentioned in the book (all London), with addresses, and encourages people to go in and support them.

* MS, this is available in audio, and I suspect would make great listening for a road trip. The author has film experience, and it shows in his very descriptive writing. This is the 4th, I think, in the 'Peculiar Crimes Unit.' Good fun, with lots of history of the city thrown in for colour. Why the BBC hasn't made a tv series out of these books, I just don't know.
