I'm typically not a reader of fiction, but I tried reading Atlas Shrugged a few years ago. I made it through 150 pages or so and just couldn't take it anymore. I found the writing stilted, boring, and, for some reason, downright depressing. Well, a couple of months ago I thought I would give it another shot. This time I managed to read 350 pages and stopped for the same reasons I just mentioned.

I just can't do it.

FWIW, I don't like Ayn Rand either.

It's hard not to "get the point" of atlas shrugged way before you finish it. I don't think I ever did, either.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I appreciated the point of the book, but only made it to the 3/4 point myself, when I read it about fifteen years ago.

I slogged my way through Atlas Shrugged quite a few years ago. It was as much a challenge to finish as a Thomas Pynchon novel, but for different reasons.

Quite a few people seem to find her philosophy appealing, though. I stumbled across a list of the 100 best novels a few years ago and bookmarked it. Here it is: Modern Library's 100 Best Novels. I found the readers list compiled on the right side very interesting. I suspect some readers voted more than once, or at least some readers felt so strongly about certain works that they solicited votes from like-minded individuals. My thought was "How do you spell fanatic?"

I am not a fanatic Al. :P

I just believe that large intrusive government will be the end of the great American experiment in liberty.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I was calling you a fanatic, Mark. I was trying to suggest that people who strive to tilt the results of an on-line poll to support their choice of philosophy, be they Galters or Scientologists, fit my definition of fanatics.
