HOLY CARP!!!
Hey,
I started reading this to Liam tonight:

I bought it when it first came out for my classroom library. It's an absolutely stunning book. As Liam said tonight, "It's like a movie inside a book!" It really is. He's having a hard time making the transition from picture books (not the reading - he just wants pictures, too) and I thought this might draw him in. He's absolutely loving it, and was begging me to read more. The pictures are gorgeous and the language is rich. I'm enjoying it as much as he is. I highly recommend it for any age (it went through my grade eight class as if it was contraband!), but thought of you guys since you have kidlets in roughly the same age bracket as Liam.

Thanks Dol - I'll bookmark this.

(We're just finishing off HP and the Philosophers Stone as a bedtime read, so this is well timed)

As a teaser, here are a couple images from the book:

It's billed as a novel in words and pictures. The pictures are essential - they tell a great deal of the story. We had a lot of fun looking at them and deciphering what each could mean. It's brilliant.

Cool, I'll check it out! Thanks.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I picked this up at the library with the boys I watch. The one is a little young for it (just over 3), but the older one (5 and a half) has been quickly progressing into longer books with few pictures. We've read a couple Roald Dahl's, and his mom has been reading a bunch of Beverly Cleary's with him at night.

Anyway, this book is a HUGE hit! We went through over a quarter of it this afternoon, and only stopped because it was time for me to leave. The pictures are awesome, of course, but he's really into the mystery aspect of it, as well. At the end of each chapter, he throws out a couple theories for what he thinks will happen next. It's good fun.

The only complaint I have so far is that I wish there were at least a few sentences on the pictures pages. I feel like he'd love to look at the pictures longer, but the bulk of the time is spent on the reading pages. Though, it is really cool when the author does that zooming in with the picture progressions.

Thanks for the recommendation, dol!

I am absolutely in love with this book. The language is beautiful, and I was quite into the story. I loved the ending as well. There are children's books that are completely entrancing, and this is one of them.
