Regarding briefings.

Quote:

"When this issue started to resurface I called the appropriate people in the agency and said I would like to know the dates from your records that briefings were held," Graham recalled. "And they contacted me and gave me four dates -- two in April '02 and two in September '02. Now, one of the things I do, and for which I have taken some flack, is keep a spiral notebook of what I do throughout the day. And so I went through my records and through a combination of my daily schedule, which I keep, and my notebooks, I confirmed and the CIA agreed that my notes were accurate; that three of those four dates there had been no briefing. There was only one day that I had been briefed, which was September the 27th of 2002."

As for the one briefing he did attend, the Florida Democrat said that he had "no recollection that issues such as waterboarding were discussed." He was not, per the sensitive nature of the matters discussed, allowed to take notes at the time. But he did highlight what he considered to be pretty strong proof that the controversial technique was not discussed.

"What struck me...was the fact that in that briefing, there were also two staff members," he said. "As you know, the general rule is that the executive is to brief the full committees of the House and Senate Intelligence committees about any ongoing or proposed action. The exception to that is what is called "covert action," where the president...only briefs the Gang of Eight, which is the four congressional leaders and the four intelligence committee leaders. Those sessions are generally conducted at an executive site, primarily at the White House itself. And they are conducted with just the authorized personnel, not with any staff or any other member of the committee.... Which leads me to conclude that this was not considered by the CIA to be a Gang of Eight briefing. Otherwise they would not have had staff in the room. And that leads me to then believe that they didn't brief us on any of the sensitive programs such as the waterboarding or other forms of excessive interrogation."

Gee, maybe Pelosi was telling the truth; if so, some of you are going to just LOVE the taste of crow.

Quirt, why are you defending a fool like pelosi?

The democrats are trying to figure out how to save her ass. The only crow that will be eaten is when the public sees just how low the democrats will stoop to cover up a lie and protect one of their own. The CIA is pissed, and you can rest assured that they will not take it lying down.

The fact that the Speaker of the House accuses the CIA of lying is huge. Sheesh, and I thought the CIA hated Bush. We're about to see a redefinition of "hate."

While Pelosi's press conference this morning was clearly intended to put to rest a process story that all politicians hate, it may well have the opposite effect -- raising more questions about her timeline and her past statements.

Make no mistake: Pelosi would not have held this sort of press conference unless she and her inner circle believed that she was losing altitude -- politically -- on the issue. But, her decision to do so could have wide-ranging political implications that will reach from Congress to the White House and back.

Quoting this so that I can remind you of it in a few months.

As John Maynard Keynes said, in the long run, we're all dead. I don't think Pelosi is going anywhere in any time frame that would mean she is a "Dead Speaker walking". If either of you seriously think you're right about this, tell me the time frame you're talking about, and how much of your hard-earned cash you're willing to lose on that bet.

Nah, I don't think she'll lose her post over this. But her credibility was seriously damaged (even if the CIA was less than truthful to Graham). She had a serious deer-in-the-headlights look yesterday, and her fumbling with answers, memos, etc. damaged her "woman in charge" personna.

The Dems know better than to dump her.

Do you think she'll be speaker in 2010? Do you think she inspires the kind of confidence the Democrats want and need?

If Barney Frank can still be where he's at, then sure, she'll probably still be Speaker.

Yes.

You want the other side of that bet?

She's never been my view of a leader. I don't mind her as a representative, but I never understood her rise through the leadership ranks. I still prefer the bare-knuckle style of a Tip O'Neill.

Quirt, you are so interested in playing political "gotcha" games. Why are you so intently fixated on my political views and affiliations?

Pelosi fcuked up. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter to me if she's a Dumbocrap or a Repubican. I don't give a crap. Go play your "gotcha" game with someone who cares.

Who says I'm playing it "with" you? When I catch you saying one thing and behaving in a completely different way, I'll call you on it, for my own amusement. I'm not playing "with" you at all, and it doesn't matter to me if you don't respond, and it doesn't matter to me if you don't care.

But, in point of fact, if you didn't care, you wouldn't respond.

Have a nice weekend, Quirt. I hope that whatever is going wrong in your life, that occasionally makes you behave the way that you do, gets worked out. Really.

Nothing wrong in my life, but thanks for worrying, Frank.

I hope that whatever causes you to think that every time someone disagrees with you it's a personal attack gets worked out. Really. Case in point ... my comment in this thread was directed at both you and George. Did you see George reacting like a wounded buffalo?

Whatever, Quirt. I was honestly trying to be nice. If it was directed at George, you would have quoted his post. You quoted mine. And since we're on the subject, when someone speaks up about your behavior, they are acting "like a wounded buffalo," but if someone makes the slightest comment that you can possibly interpret as an insult, you go on the war path and respond with the verbal equivalent of a man-portable nuke.

Most of the time, I just accept that it's just the way you are, and the context in which you are most comfortable communicating, so most of the time, I do my best to simply avoid you.

You may be a nice person in real life. Here, not so much.

I quoted yours, which basically copied his and waved some pom-poms. And George knew it was directed at him too, because he responded.

Seriously, you have an amazing persecution complex.

In a quixotic and probably naively innocent attempt to remain consistent in my forum reproachments, I must request that you refrain from barrack room pyschoanalysis and stick to legal opinion and domestic political analysis both for which you have shown demonstrated competence.
