HOLY CARP!!!
No, he can't draw to save his life, but he is the lead role in his fourth grade musical.

I've been working backstage these past few days helping with costume changes, etc.. He's doing such a great job (acting and cello playing). He has all his lines memorized like a pro and he speaks loudly and clearly. He's very enthusiastic about his part.

What makes me most proud is that I am NOT a theater mom (those type that are basically working the strings on the marrionette of their child). I did not tell him to sign up or try out. I was shocked--even skeptical that he was telling me the truth--when he came home and told me his little name was posted as the lead. He has done this all on his own.

Of course, once he made it, I've been very supportive (getting him a costume, volunteering, even got a new video camera).

Yeah, there are four lead roles and of the four, three parents are backstage. It's hot back there. There really should be a cooler of beer.

He's grandpa.

He's wearing an old-guy hat, glasses, khaki pants and suspenders.

The music teacher wrote the script -- so you wouldn't be familiar with it. There is a small stage with a family acting and it alternates with the chorus singing and dancing. He's an actor and he takes a break for a cello part.

He takes an extra bow at the end and the audience gave them an extra cheer.

Awesome! Good for him, R2! Being able to get up on stage gives kids such great skills that are valuable later on. And it really is a lot of fun until you try to make a career of it and realize that it's just a job like everything else.

Thanks, all.

I don't have any photos yet, but if I get any good ones, I'll post them. I am hoping to get a video of the whole thing to play for the grandparents, who can't be there.

I'm proud that he took a risk and tried out and put himself out there. He did this all on his own. You're right, Free Rider, you do so much for them for so long, it's amazing when they step out on their own and try their luck at something new.

And you're right, Dol, it's a great experience all around.

Lauren had her first stage successes in 4th grade as well. It may be a very formative experience for R2-Son.

It's just a little play, but a big effort for him.

I'm dressed in all black today and will be backstage, hot and dusty. I'll let ya all know how it goes.

Thanks for your interest in my little world.

It's neat to see kids discover their own interests. Amazing to see kids come into their own.

Um, not quite that formal, Mik. And my hair is not quite that long, but otherwise, yeah, that's exactly what I look like.

I'm exhausted. It's not easy managing 74 kids.

Final performance tonight.

Wow, this is fantastic. So cool R2.
My kid likes these things too. He never tells me much of it either. His own initiative.
Some of my proudest moments these last 2 yrs have to do with seeing the kid on stage. Heck, he even volunteers to do stuff backstage. He seems to like everything about it.
I think drama gives him confidence.

Seeing so many of the other kids be supportive of each other just breaks a mom's heart.

I know there are jerks out there, but sometimes you forget how many great kids there are, too. To see other kids cheer for my son and slap him on the back (and ask for his autograph, ha!) made me cry.

Being friendly to someone else's kid is just the kindest thing.
