Medicare/Medicaid are the deal-breakers. While there is a Social Security crunch due to the bulge of baby boomers, it pales in comparison. If you invert that first chart, you'll see SS running only slightly above expected constant tax revenue, but the health programs rising at a frightening rate. All the more reason that comprehensive steps be taken to reduce the cost of health care however funded in every way practically and humanely possible.

I suppose Obama is thinking he is addressing the Medicare issue with the coming attempt to reform health care?

This is a uniquely hard problem to tackle because we're culturally incapable of thinking clearly about it. We have to wrap our minds around the fact that health and life are not in fact priceless.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

What we need is a 100% boycott of health care.

Sorry George. But you are close to retirement so it's all good.

OK, Mark. Boycott health care. Hope your kids don't get sick. Because that will be the end of your boycott.

It's not healthcare anyway for the most part as I've found out (no offense to George) but I got a lot of "sick care" over the last several years by trusting prescriptions too much and not realizing that regular exercise and a commitment to eating as close to the natural state as possible could keep me both out of the doctor's office and off the drugs.

Yep, there's no profit motive in keeping people healthy. That's the main reason I think the free market is not a good fit for the health care industry.

When I broke my leg the doctor told me if I'd just eaten healthier I wouldn't be having all these problems. He also said I needed to change my exercise regimen - stop exercising near where freaking great rocks can land on your leg would apparently be a good start.

In the end, I succumbed to the evils of modern medicine, allowed them to remove the whole-grain bread and lettuce splint I'd attempted to apply (with aloe, I might add!), and let them do their worst.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Oh trust me on that one Mik.

I cannot boycott the health care industry.

I would probably end up in jail in this ridiculous social environment.

There's alot of truth in that statement. Proper nutrition can help with mild illnesses, cold, allergies, and even depression.

Rationing.

It's coming, get used to it, love it, live it. If you don't value human life on the early end of the scale (which our President doesn't), one ceryainly will not value it on the other end of the scale.

Whether you live or die will depend upon your cost/benefit analysis...

Bad idea.

Health care is a necessity. I had apendicitis as a kid, broken bones... knee surgery.

Without out health care I'd be dead, or even worse, unable to ski.

Edit, was responding to Jolly and Mik re: nobody getting out alive.

Not disputing that. I've also got nothing against health care professionals. Some of the drug problems bother me a little. I do have some issues with the current insurance industry. Frankly, if it wasn't for the fear that something would happen tommorrow where M&M's, Luke, or myself would need to be hospitalized, I'd pull out of our insurance plan and go heavily into a medical savings plan.

Count on it. We will do what is expedient, as opposed to reaching as far as we can, which is what has gotten us to this level of healthcare.

Nah, you can't go uncovered, unless things get really, really tight. A broken leg can set you back 40 grand. Even small things like day surgery can hit 10K.

Or a pregnancy... :hide:

It is not a bad idea. It used to be that health insurance meant major medical - you paid for your routine healthcare, and insurance kicked in when you had a major illness. We can thank the unions for the idea that health insuarance ought to cover everything.

You think it's a bad idea to engage in some sort of rational cost/benefit analysis in health care, keeping in mind that it's all essentially tax payer money? (Whether medicare or health insurance paid for by the exact same people who are paying taxes.)
