Obama seeks to block release of abuse photos

No more airing the dirty laundry?

The move represented a sharp reversal from Obama's repeated pledges for open government, and in particular from his promise to be forthcoming with information that courts have ruled should be publicly available.

Yeah, I just saw that. My initial reaction is not favorable. I want to hear his rationale.

Obama decided he did not feel comfortable with the photos release, and was concerned it would inflame tensions in Iraq and Afghanistan, put U.S. soldiers at higher risk and make the U.S. mission in those two wars more difficult, according to White House officials.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the president was concerned that the photos' release would pose a national security threat, an argument the administration has not made yet in the courts.

"The president does not believe that the strongest case regarding the release of these photos was presented to the court and that was a case based on his concern about what the release would do to our national security," Gibbs said.

Good decision - even if a flip. In or after previous wars, we have put all kinds of things away for 50 or 100 years. If at all possible, that would be appropriate - little good served in throwing fuel on fires. These photos are used on anti-US websites in regions of the world where we could use more friends. A billion dollars for schools and infrastructure can be undone by these photos.

Kudos to Obama. I won't use this to disparage him. He made a good decision and I applaud him for that.

I listened to a little of the press briefing, and the after comments. The suspicion is that the military and CIA persuaded him to change his mind. A good thing in any case.

I suspect Congress will not be far behind now that Nancy's behind is also on the firing line.

It is a good decision by Obama, all things being what they are today, but he never should have let it get this far. He needs to start applying the muscle he has shown the business community to Congress. He's the leader of the party and needs to act like it.

I suppose that in the end it is most important that he does the right thing, even if he is either too stupid to have realized that Bush's policies really were best for the country, or he is just a machinating liar who realized that but needed any lie possible to get elected.

Well, this is the flip-flop thread, after all.

April: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/04/obama-adminis-3.html
Quote:

In a letter from the Justice Department to a federal judge yesterday, the Obama administration announced that the Pentagon would turn over to the American Civil Liberties Union 44 photographs showing detainee abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush administration.

The photographs are part of a 2003 Freedom of Information Act request by the ACLU for all information relating to the treatment of detainees -- the same battle that led, last week, to President Obama's decision to release memos from the Bush Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel providing legal justifications for harsh interrogation methods that human rights groups call torture.

Courts had ruled against the Bush administration's attempts to keep the photographs from public view. ACLU attorney Amrit Singh tells ABC News that "the fact that the Obama administration opted not to seek further review is a sign that it is committed to more transparency."

Singh added that the photographs "only underscore the need for a criminal investigation and prosecution if warranted" of U.S. officials responsible for the harsh treatment of detainees.

May: President Obama Reverses Course on Releasing More Detainee Abuse Photographs
Quote:

President Obama met with White House counsel Greg Craig and other members of the White House counsel team last week and told them that he had second thoughts about the decision to hand over photographs of detainee abuse to the ACLU, per a judge's order, and had changed his mind.

The president "believes their release would endanger our troops," a White House official says, adding that the president "believes that the national security implications of such a release have not been fully presented to the court."

At the end of that meeting, the president directed Craig to object to the immediate release of the photos on those grounds. In an Oval Office meeting with Iraq Commander General Ray Odierno, the president told him of his decision to argue against the release of the photographs.

The move is a complete 180. In a letter from the Justice Department to a federal judge on April 23, the Obama administration announced that the Pentagon would turn over 44 photographs showing detainee abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq during the Bush administration.

The photographs are part of a 2003 Freedom of Information Act request by the ACLU for all information relating to the treatment of detainees -- the same battle that led to President Obama's decision to release memos from the Bush Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel providing legal justifications for brutal interrogation methods, many of which the International Committee of the Red Cross calls torture.

"The reversal is another indication of a continuance of the Bush administration policies under the Obama administration," ACLU attorney Amrit Singh told ABC News. "President Obama's promise of accountability is meaningless, this is inconsistent with his promise of transparency, it violates the government's commitment to the court. People need to examine these abusive photographs, but also the government officials need to be held accountable."
