(Hey, speaking of which: The ranch that the Manson Family was using as a compound, burned. Personally, my opinion is, good riddance.) Barker Ranch Destroyed By Fire Written by Tom Woods Wednesday, 06 May 2009 The historic Barker Ranch has burned down under unknown circumstances. Located up the Goler Wash between Panamint Valley and Death Valley, the Barker Ranch gained fame after the notorious Charles Manson and his murderous followers called the Ranch their home while they waited for their perceived race war apocalypse to start. Well preserved, yet totally open to the public, the Barker was a rare piece of living history, where people could enter and even spend the night if they chose. That is all gone now. Bishop resident Renn Everhart sent photos of the now burned down Barker Ranch that show streaks of black soot from the windows. With the wood timbers burned out, the corrugated steel roof now sags. Inside the old ranch house, the floor is covered with debris. When the fire occurred is not known, but Everhart reports that the photographs were taken on Tuesday, May 5. When we contacted the National Park Service on Wednesday, they too had just heard the reports and had sent a Ranger out to investigate. In such a large park with rough desert driving to reach the Barker Ranch, the Ranger had not yet returned with a report at press time. Having just seen the pictures himself, Terry Baldino with Death Valley National Park called the loss of the Barker Ranch, “devastating.” Headed up by the Park Archeologist, crews had done restoration work to fix up the old building just this spring. Baldino says the park, “suffered a blow,” that, “hurts everyone.” “Any historic object, once lost, can’t be re-created,” he adds. The Manson Family only stayed at the Barker Ranch for a short time, but interest in the old ranch stayed high even into recent years when law enforcement conducted a search for additional Manson victims believed to be buried there. What caused this fire is not known. At this point, investigations to determine a cause are ongoing. |

I made my point last year. Here it is again: There was no doubt in my mind I was torturing my patients every time I instilled their tracheostomy or endotracheal breathing tubes with saline (salt water) and suctioned them clear of mucous. We had to do this every 1-2 hours (sometimes every 15 minutes), so not to let their breathing passages and lungs clog up. And of course we knew what we were doing, watching their heart monitors, assessing second by second their response to the procedure, applying other interventions when needed. We gave them extra oxygen before & during the procedure (it's called bagging). But by the look of terror in their faces, I knew affect wise, how they felt of it. They were restrained (tied down) or chemically paralyzed (with drugs so they couldn't move) during it. If they could move, they gagged, coughed, arched, flailed, or did whatever they could to fight, to resist it. We kept on with it 'cause we had to. Often they were conscious, briefly drowning in their own secretions, with what we squirted in then sucked out. Anyone here have this done to them in ICU? Am I exaggerating? I think not. We explained what we were doing every time, but this didn't seem to matter much. Judging by their faces, it seemed scary every time. The older ones soon realized it was a temporary thing. Sometimes there were tears when that time came. Some were teens, but many more were babies and toddlers. The little ones don't understand why we do this. I've asked older ones who got well and left ICU what their worst ICU memories were. Suctioning always makes their list. IMO water boarding is torture. I've watched the videos. It seems very much like what we did to our patients in ICU. |
