Alan Keyes arrested at Notre Dame UPI picked up the story Notre Dame is going to take a huge and well deserved hit on all this. Go Alan! |

Scratch a libertarian, find a fascist. Whatever happened to private property rights? Notre Dame, last I heard, was a private institution. Are they not entitled to exclude from their property anyone they wish? They can't exclude paying students ... those people have a contract right, bought and paid for, to be on campus. But I am not aware that Alan Keyes is a Notre Dame student (although it appears he'd benefit from some classes in property rights). As an unaffiliated third party, they are free to tell him his presence on their property is not welcome. And they are free to call the police if he trespasses. I hope he gets a nice long time in the cooler. |

Well Quirt, there's the law and then there's the press. Making martyrs out of national public figures is just bad press, especially given the national exposure of this event. Keyes went to ND intent on being arrested, he got what he wanted, and he seems quite willing to take his lumps for it. Good for him. I don't find it particularly surprising that you would want the full hammer of the law dropped on someone for what is basically a misdemeanor given the political reasons for trespass. |

Alan Keyes is kind of like your nutty uncle - you know, the one who half the time amazes you with his perceptiveness, but the other half of the time says things that make you wonder how he survives outside of an asylum. In the polarizing light of American politics, conservatives have to refuse to acknowledge his part-time nuttiness, and liberals have to refuse to acknowledge his part-time brilliance. Everyone has to be knight in shining armor, or Satan incarnate. No one is allowed to be merely human. Having said that, Notre Dame really screwed the pooch here. |

You should work for Homeland Security -- Napolitano can use someone like you who has no scruples about smearing someone advocating the rights of the unborn in a peaceful political protest as a fascist. |

It seems like the only time the Left is concerned about not restricting or limiting private property rights is when they work to muzzle their opposition. |

Once again it becomes an issue of the left and the right. It's neither. The church needs this distraction. Personally, I think the pro-life movement is a smokescreen to make the church appear to value life in spite of a culture of child exploitation over the past century or four. Clergy abuse cases are still popping up left and right and now women are coming forward in greater numbers. Bishop D'Arcy can't close parishes and schools fast enough as he and his cronies nears retirement -- there simple AREN'T ANY replacements coming up through the ranks. |

Backpedaling? Come back from Wonderland, the rabbit hole is over there. You didn't say they weren't within their rights. You just complained about the way they chose to exercise those rights. If it's a right, they can do what they want, and you shouldn't carp about how they choose to exercise their rights. If you had any principles at all, that is. |

Dewey: I find answers to things in irony. It's IRONIC that the RC church -- of all denominations -- puts itself out as being pro-life when they have paid out $500 billion and counting for ruining the lives of so many children. |

There have been a few thousand reported cases of abuse in the US and Canada. Since 1974 there have been over 45 million abortions. The church eventually tried to make compensation and has taken action to prevent further occurrence. There is counseling for victims available. What remedies do you offer the 45 million dead? Your comparison is absurd. |

Mikhailoh: I am as against abortion as you are. I just think the church's tactic is misguided because it's about control (which is also what child sex abuse is about). You don't prevent abortion through control or shame, you prevent it through education. |

and you also don't control abortion by saying "don't do what I do, do what I tell you to do:" From late 2008: http://www.illinoislawyerblog.com/2008/08/shocking_disclosures_in_clergy_sex_abuse_trial.html the last sentence of the first paragraph, where the priest allegedly performed an abortion on another teenage rape victim with his BARE HANDS is particularly gruesome. The Bishop's over-testifying blew the case for the defense. The kid got a paltry $5 million. |

PL. what you said was:
What I have pointed out is that the magnitude of the two problems are not even remotely comparable. How the church goes about opposing abortion was not in this part of the discussion, although I think they are foolish to honor a pro-abortion president at Notre Dame. |
