If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
One of my fondest memories is of a tape we had for Lauren of various soothing music and songs to play at bedtime. Have you put together a playlist yet? I'd recommend you do, and use it pretty much exclusively at that time of night. He'll come to associate that music with relaxing and going to sleep, and you'll never forget it.

I'll see if I can dig ours up and burn a copy. It had some pretty sappy stuff on it, but there are a lot of sappy feelings that go along with rocking your kid to sleep.

Oh, and the other thing? To relax him, pat on his diaper in a rythymic pattern. Pat, pat-pat pat, pat-pat. It really worked well for us.

Yep. Noise is GOOD when they're sleeping. I used to crash around the apartment when Liam was asleep. While he's still not a great sleeper (he's like me - he just doesn't need a lot of sleep), he doesn't wake up because of noises.

Jon, I highly recommend this CD:

My parents have used it since my older bother was a baby. The tape they had originally was in pretty rough shape - it's lived through 7 kids :silly: - so when I saw they had it online I grabbed a copy. I can rip the files for you and upload them via Box.net.

OMG, white noise! You need it for as soon as you get home. Of all the advice everybody gave us before Luke was born, this is the one thing nobody mentioned, and by God, I wish they had.

Apparently, the womb is a fairly noisy place, as is the hospital. All the machines, nurses walking around, the air conditioners, etc... By comparison, your home is extremely quiet. So much so, that babies have a difficult time adjusting to the quiet when it's time to go to sleep. Every time I went to put Luke down, he'd just start crying (M&M's had pneumonia, so she couldn't help). It was the most bittersweet 24 hours of my life. This lovely child, that was mine, yet he wouldn't stop crying unless I was carrying him. When we went to the pediatricians the next day, they were laughing. Between M&M's being all bloodshot eyes, cough's and sneezes, and my having been up 24 hours straight without letting go of the boy, we were quite a sight. The thing I remember most clearly from that day is thinking over and over "OMG, what have we done?!
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Pavlovian conditioning really works. Same music every night @ bedtime, and through the night time feeding. Even the best stuff will drive you nuts after a while, but it's waaay better than the alternative.
Pfft.

That sounds nice, NAK. I like her voice.

This was the tape (available as cd now) I had when my son was a baby. I had others, but this quickly became the favourite, because it soothed me as well. Some other lullaby type recordings made me want to scream after a few listenings, this was always a pleasure to listen to.

Her voice is very similar to what we had. If you want something a bit edgier, try this link - lullaby versions of songs by the Ramones, Radiohead, Metallica, etc.
