Let me rephrase the question. Can the deep South be trusted to give blacks access to polls without federal supervision? And if so, what has changed since the 60s? |

Can you? Are you even passing familiar with the modern-day South? Do you find more predjudice in the South than in other regions of the country? Doesn't the South produce more successful black politicians, and have a higher black voter turn-out than other regions of the country? It's not 1865 or even 1965 in the South, anymore. But do not let me stand in the way of your bigotry... |

Ma'am, I feel special everyday. As to Jon's questions... 1. Yes. 2. If you've ever seen an election in New Orleans, we don't allow blacks to vote just once. Many do so repeatedly. I've been somewhat familiar with politics in this state since the 1970's. The only coercion I've seen of black votes is the folks with ties to Democratic candidates passing out money. Current rate is $5/vote. Lastly, I didn't hint you were a bigot, I flat came out and said it. You have some peculiar hate about the South that I just don't quite understand...we may be different, but we're as educated as about anybody else and less bigoted than many. And although you may have been born in Texas, I suspect you're about as much Texan as a pair of wingtips... |

I can't say about voting, but in my experience, race relations are easier and more comfortable in the south than the north. |

I believe the answer to #1 is yes. As far as #2 is concerned I believe the democrats have largely been replaced by republicans. Of course trust is kind of a slippery term, but the republicans seem to be more trustworthy. I don't mean to imply that the democrats can't be trusted - in their own special way. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

What has changed - and what has remained the same - in the south is exactly the same as what has changed and remained the same in the north. The racism of the '60's is now two generations removed from both, and while some elements of racism remain, and probably always will, American culture today is far more homogenous and far less racist than was the case in the past. At this point, to think that the south shows any more racism than is found in the north is simply a delusion built on outdated stereotypes of the other, and an unrealistically optimistic view of the self. |

I'm in an interracial marriage and I live in the South. I have a friend who is white and is married to a Japanese woman that lives a few miles down the road. Coming from California, you would have thought I'd seen a lot of interracial marriages, but no... Not really. Here in the South, there are interracial couples all over the place. Something else to bear in mind, too: People have migrated all over the place. In fact, it's pretty rare for people to live out their whole lives in one town, city, or state the way they did prior to WWII. I meet more people here in Tennessee that are from Michigan, California, Texas, Arizona, or Bermuda or Japan... It's really amazing. The stereotypes of the deeply racist South are just old and tired and really don't apply any longer. There may be racism, but by and large, I've noticed that black people here, have far less of a chip on their shoulder than in other places I've lived. |

I find that racism is alive and well in large cities. Milwaukee, WI is one of the most racist places I have ever been. That was 20 years ago. I doubt much has changed because the people are still passing it on to their children. |

I agree with this post almost in its entirety. But contained in there is the admission that the society Jolly grew up in was racist. The reason I phrased the question the way I did, and the reason I pressed it so many times, was to see if he'd make that admission, either implicitly or explicitly. Frankly I didn't think he would. |
